Thanks! I find it interesting and useful for myself to dissect this stuff because it helps me in my own work.

 

I would also consider another point - don't kill me here - but my opinion is that the current era is also difficult for the Lady G because she may be going through it sober, and it's relatively new to her. I have known many addicts (the biz is full of them) and let me tell you, when you are freshly sober with no 'little helpers', it can be very difficult. Just like if for many years you learned to 'relax' with booze, try going sober and relaxing naturally - in the beginning it's incredibly hard. Cocaine is used by many in this biz and it's the ultimate '**ck yeah I can do it, get out of my way I'm the best' kind of high. If you take it for years to boost self confidence and then go sober, you're in trouble because now you have to get that persona back or develop a new one... and perhaps it's not the same one. Not easy, especially if you're female.

 

 

Hmmm.... maybe that would explain why she looked so nervous after The Voice performance.

Of course the fanbase isn't expanding. She's not used Twitter for more than a week now, she hasn't promoted properly, she hasn't had big hits and she tries to attract the wrong kind of GP - the straight guys who wouldn't spend money on Gaga anyways, she has to attract to teen girls and gay guys to expand her fanbase and I don't think Interscope realizes that all the time.

Most of the fans became fans because of her performances (Paparazzi VMA 2009, Telephone BRIT 2010, her acoustic Poker Face performances) and her videos (Poker Face, Bad Romance, Telephone, Judas in Latin America). This era she's barely done promotion (only in 3 countries) and has only had one video, and of course you're not expanding your fanbase with that.

 

In my opinion, one of her biggest problems is that fact that although she built up her persona on the 'I don't care' sort of mantra to the world, she does care a bit too much.

 

On her level, the only way to stay sane and keep making progress is to:

 

1) mostly stay off the Internet

2) keep your old team around you because they're the only ones who still tell you the truth

3) repeat one and two

 

When you start trying to be liked by everyone, you are going to be liked by no one. She started out as a 'special case' an anti-hero pop star. But with this record and her new personas she moved away from that, trying to compete with the rest of the idol bunch. Wrong move.

I don't even want Gypsy as the third single anymore. If DWUW couldn't take off I don't see Gypsy doing any better. Gaga needs to stick to what she's known for and release something that would either be a hit or a flop; no in-betweens. I'm here for Sexxx Dreams, Aura, or Venus

I wouldn't say that's completely true even tho I agree with you on some!

 

If she wanted to be like the rest and to be "liked", she would have made songs like Just Dance or Bad Romance or idk, and that's not the case.. Even tho chorus of Applause is generic, the rest of the song isn't, the video for sure isn't...

 

The entire album is going through different genres, and we know what sells-generic pop....

I don't care for "Safe" choices, I understand why some monsters would want safe because of her image blah blah blah, I stan for the crazy Gags that don't give a **** what other say. I mean one of the most safe choices on the album doesn't look like it's going anywhere so why not release something risky but still have the possibility of a smash hit? ... There's potential in all three of those songs imo!

You are right, but they all have different tastes in music, too. Applause is a bit specific. IMO only it doesn't have across the board appeal like, say, 'We Are The Champions', which is a good example of what you speak of.

 

Additionally, it's only the pre-chorus hooks and and maybe the choruses themselves that work across the board. The verses are too specific and not something that most people would be into.

Of course they all have different tastes in music, because everyone does. The point is that there is a broad definition of what defines a "performer". Any one who competes in any way or performs at any level, solo or in a group, is a performer. As a whole, performers and certain personality types enjoy the "Applause". Even certain personality types who don't, can still enjoy it or crave it from time to time.

 

No one cares about relating to every word of every line. It's pop music and dance pop at that. The song has a fun beat and a general message to get people moving in the car or at the clubs, they don't care about the rest.

I'm not saying that I know what happened or who to blaim for it. She said herself in the radio interview that she does it herself and I'm only commenting why I find that a bad idea.

Which radio interview and she does what herself? Gaga still has a record label with a full promo team and she still has a management team. Gaga does not handle the promotional side or business side of her career. She has people for that.

At the end of the day on that level it's not those things that will help her expand the base, it's the SONGS.

 

But yes, she should be more active with her app and release, say, a b-side every two months just for YOU guys, the die-hards - while the actual official releases are another thing. That way everyone is happy and LM's have something to munch on and not go into disaster/abandonment mode, haha. I hope that will be the case.
