Mash ups can happen for very, very dissimilar songs. In fact those are some of the more interesting mash ups. Quite honestly, so many songs share the same chord progression or melodic harmony of EY. I've always noticed that Madonna tends to collab with people that are younger than her (Britney, JT, Nicki Minaj, etc) which I think is her way of proving that she isn't threatened by them. She knows she's unlikely to ever lose her Queen of Pop title, so she needn't feel worried about fresh talent and she tends to do collabs with those who have very different markets to her as well. Gaga is one of the few popstars who she has not been keen to embrace and I can't help thinking it's because she's gaining traction as the new pop queen and Madonna feels like her title is under threat. Her bringing up the BTW/EY controversy at every opportunity was her way of keeping Gaga down and I will even go as far to say that it was a scheme to ruin her career and to an extent, it succeeded.
