Franch Toast 27,807
This is the second botched attempt at lethal injection in Tennessee this year. And yet people will defend this practice. Even if it were successful, there is no proof that capital punishment acts as a deterrent to committing crime or makes the victims' families feel a sense of justice, not to mention the systemic inequalities in the so-called justice system and the innocent people who've ended up death row. I am not defending people who've committed brutal, heinous crimes, but I don't believe this practice belong in civil society. Meruk Holland 2,466
13 minutes ago, Controversiaga said: why should Christa be protected from “cruel and unusual” punishment ??? Who the hell do u think she is? Because it sets a precedent. Making exceptions for one person allows those exceptions to become a rule. The laws exist as they do because society, as a whole, has agreed that if any one of us at any time needed to be punished, then there are boundaries we don't cross, regardless of the crime. This could be because we know that innocent people will be found guilty, or more likely, because we think some day, our loved ones or even ourselves will might have to experience these punishments. It doesn't matter how strong the victim's desires for vengeance and retribution are, there are reasons, however nebulous, that we don't allow cruel and unusual punishment. 1

The US has tried to give the death penalty to people who have killed their abusers. Do they deserve to die for commiting a murder in that case? And here's the final thing. Do you think the state should be given the power to kill people it decides should be killed? And if you agree with it - how do you prevent the state killing people you don't think deserve it? The German people killed up to 2000 people on Kristallnacht because of the assasination of Ernst Vom Rath. The government imprisoned 30,000 jewish men for it and then sent them to the camps because of that assasination. In the eyes of the law, they deserved the criminal punishment given out to them. There are many ways for a trial to seem fair and balanced and for it to still not reflect what really happened. Defendants can even believe they really did commit a crime when they didn't. I'm not saying that's what happened in this case, but these tactics are common in every day cases, let alone murder cases involving the death penalty.

Bronco 28,342
People here talking about justice. What justice came to Colleen's family from waiting 30 years for yesterday? What justice came to Colleen's family as they had to crowd fund to be able to attend the execution? What justice came to Colleen's family as they sat their and watched the execution fail? What justice came to the family as they had to watch Christa Pike be given emergency medical treatment? And what justice waits for the family as they now will face further years of never ending legal battles if Christa survives? 30 years they've been deprived of an end to this. And it's not even over yet. Life in prison without parole would have ended this 30 years ago. The gays know how to party
