The prison system is supposed to be rehabilitative. Capital punishment is the antithesis of rehabilitation. Executions are barbaric, nonsensical, and wrong. 

I'm glad the death sentence has been suspended for her.

I started listening to various podcasts and things about this case. The abuse Christa experienced was insane. It would mess anyone up. And no that doesn’t make an excuse for her to murder someone. I’m just not sure where I stand. What she did was barbaric. I’m just not sure I fully support the death penalty either. I can totally understand how the victim’s family would want that though.

Update:

The US Supreme Court is allowing the execution of Christa Gail Pike to go forward, overturning a last-minute stay on Wednesday that was issued by an appeals court hours earlier.

The state’s execution order expires at midnight, said Kelley Henry, a Nashville-based attorney experienced with Tennessee death penalty law. If time runs out and the stay is lifted, the Tennessee Supreme Court would need to set a new execution date.

So they attempted to execute her and it seems like it failed? So now there is an ambulance there. Unsure if she is still alive or not.

Huh... Any idea why they don't just use surgical anaesthesia that's already available in the states?

They have yet to say if she’s still alive or dead but speculation is that she’s alive and has been taken to the hospital. The warrant hasn’t released a statement or spoken to the press saying it was carried out (which is normal procedure). The reporters in the witness chamber also reported she was breathing, snoring and talking which wasn’t normal.

A couple reasons.

For one, the companies that make most anesthetics don't allow their drugs to be sold to prisons and used for lethal injections. Boycotts kinda dry up the market so they opt for tranquilizer drugs or sedatives instead.

And secondly, anesthesiologists take an oath to "do no harm" so they don't actually participate in executions. Because there's no expert in the room, there's no one to tell if the anesthesia has actually worked or not when they do use it. That's why it's estimated that so many are just paralyzed, not unconscious, when the killing drugs are administered and they asphyxiate and feel their insides burning from potassium chloride.

So like, do they make her a DNR at the hospital? I know Ethics is having a horrible day at that hospital.

She would have to explicitly sign a DNR, I think. So the hospital does whatever they can to bring her back to health then she's turned back over into prison custody for them to try executing her again.

Kind of wild when you think about it.
