To many, she's a loveable eccentric. To me, she's always been irritating and says things purely for attention and gets away with saying outrageous things because the eccentricity's a great excuse. For example, everyone laughed on Graham Norton when she told a story about giving hand relief to a man in a tree (which people only found funny because of her age, if it were a young woman, they'd be horrified) and she poured a drink can over a guy who wouldn't give his seat up for her on a bus (some disabilities can't be seen). I always found her stories to be ridiculous. This is the perfect example of how she just says whatever comes into her head without the slightest thought for how it sounds or reads the room. To ask someone "what are you?", proceed to guess their race and then assume the race of their parents individually is unspeakably rude regardless of what your intention is. You'll notice that everyone always seems too stunned to speak or laughs it off. I just think they don't know how to deal with an old eccentric woman. Which is why it's allowed to continue.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - elderly women don't know how cheeky they are. I've heard them say stuff that would get you punched if you said it in the wrong company. God forbid they ever end up in prison.

Well I misspoke because I seemed to remember it was Africa because I hadn’t watched the special in a while, nothing to do with the women she was talking to. Sorry if it came across that way. I’d like to think given my track record in topics on here I’m pretty aware of racism and even talk about it often in some of the topics.

This knee jerk reaction of some people pretending the one thing worse than being being racist is being called one. 

She can be both be a sweet older naive lady as well as holding outdated world views that you can be held accountable for. Ofc bullying and burning at the stake are never the solution. However being a racist or simply making a racist remark are both harmful and need to be adressed as such.

Personally I think this is in bad taste and she basically dismissed him and his heritage. To play devil's advocate, I think she thought she was educating him on terms from the past, not like... THIS IS YOUR PLACE. YOUR ARE MIXED. CAST OVER THERE WITH YE. Unfortunately, neither of these aspects came across well. Either way, she's speaking down to a black man. Mama, you gotta chill. It's not the the 1960s anymore.
