I still stand by the fact that it is Gaga’s most polarizing single and the outlier in her entire choice of singles in her career. I think that’s why I really enjoy the song and have been relistening to it lately. I believe it was the perfect song to make both fans, critics and the GP be like WTF?! This. It being essentially an anti-pop song while being a song about her feeling disillusioned with fame/her persona is meta and one of the strongest musical/compositional statements she’s ever made, tbh. Imagine the sheer meltdown if Come To Grandma or Just Another Disappointment was the lead single Edited June 30 by Gorehound
badmonsterkid 127
Ayo hands down. Not sure why it’s not an option on this poll. TBH I couldn’t stand the chorus at first but it grew on me. She rides the verses smooth like butter and is ripping her vocals by the end of the song. I LIVE for her vocal shredding near the end.
Jarvin 1,488
Lead single should have been Joanne! One of my favourite songs of hers. Joanne Million Reasons Just Another Day she could have stuck with the singersongwriter vibe.
VelvetVenus 114
It should have been Diamond Heart as the lead and then Perfect Illusion as the second single. DH had better chances at the charts and radio. Can you imagine how good the storyline would be: 1. Diamond Heart -> he loves me and and gives me everything 2. Perfect Illusion -> he is not that perfect and i'm angry and deluded about it 3. Million Reasons -> i'm destroyed, but i still love him even if it is for just one reason 4. John Wayne -> fck it, men are trash, let's have fun 1
Anderson123 42,497
Perfect Illusion was absolutely the best choice for lead single. The meltdowns here if A-Yo had been the lead single would’ve been worse than Stupid Love and you guys know it.
gagzus 22,342
Perfect Illusion was the perfect choice tbh and it’s still one of the best songs on the album. None of the songs on the record feel like singles even the ones released imo. PI was the best of a bad bunch if I’m honest. Joanne is a great album but an album from a popstar it is not, from a country or indie star sure but not a popstar of Gaga’s magnitude at the time.
RochesterJoannster 4,036
I think Million Reasons actually should have just been first. It could have benefited if it had lead single hype. Letting PI go first and flop gave MR a less favorable position. It could have gotten the radio deal PI did instead of having to grow from nothing (and months of resistance). It ended up doing fine anyway, as it recently became Gaga’s 11th song to hit a billion streams, and she’s got a lot more than 11 songs. But if MR went first and had an easier time, maybe Diamond Heart could have had some success as a second single (or John Wayne) Edited Thursday at 08:25 PM by RochesterJoannster

I’m thinking of “That Don’t Impress Me Much” specifically, but I hear you about it being a bit more left of center (especially the guitar work). Definitely still has the Gaga flair. EDEJ 40
This is the order I would have done it 1. A-Yo 2. John Wayne 3. Million Reasons 4. Diamond Heart 5. Joanne
MarvinGa 783
Diamond Heart is good for the stadiums but not for the radio. I love it but it sounds flat and I always have a feeling that something is missing in the song. The most radio-friendly are A-YO (which would be my first choice), Joanne (which also would be a good introduction to the era or the second single) and Come To Mama (I know it’s cheesy but radio would eat it up).
TheMontebello 1,068
It should be Perfect Illusion and I don't care if it wasn't a hit. The ones with taste got it and that's what matters. And my gripe with Joanne is that it should have had more songs in the same vein. Edit: I wouldn't mind the lead being Diamond Heart though.
