Economy 53,076 Posted June 28 Share Posted June 28 (edited) Im gonna get a lot of hate for saying this cuz I know GGD overwhelmingly support this but this is one of the few left wing econonic policies i strongly disagree with Despite the good intentions, rent controls have notoriously been documented to have a lot of unintended consequences. U get some relief in the short term but a lot of bad comes in the long term Rents are too high i agree, but the best policies to deal with them arent really rent control. Subsidize (or provide other incentives) for building of affordable housing... slap vacancy taxes... ban Air BNBs and ban foreign buyers if your city has a major issue with that. Enact special taxes for flippers/short term property holder. Maybe even establish limits on how many properties individuals or companies can own. Meh, ik it often isnt cost effective either tbh ive seen failure examples here But id still take it over rent control. Im just trying to emphasize that im not indifferent to housing crisis and impact on ppl but I just really think rent control is among the worse of the worst housing policies long term.
