Jobs these days are fast paced and exhausting in general. Most of us dont get tipped for it when were not in food service and we get way less per hour than that

Well, they should be servers, then! I don't think you understand how physically strenuous thirteen hours on your feet on a three floor restaurant that turns over six times a day is, and that's ok. But certainly don't equate my job with anyone elses. Come be a server if you want 700 dollars a day and think you're up for it.

I worked grocery jobs and retail when I was younger. When I finished university I worked office jobs. I left because serving pays more and to me is worth it, but it is by FAR the hardest of the bunch.

I'm just thinking about all the "ignorant American" comments if a bunch of Americans went to another country and did something that was the equivalent of not tipping 

When I go to another country I take note of that country's customs, so when I went to the US I sucked it up and tipped. Yeah I could've not done it out of "protest" but that achieves nothing but **** over someone already working below minimum wage.

It's terrifying that a worker has to rely almost solely on a risky income...it's almost like they're hired to beg for peoples money while they receive orders from someone who barely pays them. USA is truly hard to understand

Well it’s a good thing the only places in legit the entire world that has tipping culture instead of an actual living wage is the US & Canada.   literally out of the entire 195 countries in the world.

So even if Americans went to any country they don’t have to tip, it wouldn’t make a difference. the only other places where tipping is big is UAE where it’s customary but not a requirement or expectation to live. In literally every other country in the world you can just not tip…

I'm not literally talking about tipping, I'm talking about Americans doing the equivalent of not tipping in another country. 

I'm Australian I'm aware that tipping isn't a thing in most countries...

This. American servers earn on average more than Western European servers, excluding Switzerland, Norway and Luxembourg. The Europeans must pay higher taxes and higher energy prices since they rely on energy imports and have sanctioned Russia, whereas America is a net exporter of energy and has lower taxes in general. I don't think it's a problem; you just need to have a sense of what something should cost and knowing what is normal in the end. Just don't let yourself be intimidated by the super high tips, they are an option you don't have to pick. Another option are less high but still significant tips. Not a shame to pick a middle option. In masses, the middle option also contributes largely. If the prices were already integrated, you wouldn't have a choice - this way, at least we have a choice. In this sense, America is more free than Europe.

I don't want to come off as harsh, but I do think that tourists who don't tip should be detained by TSA agents prior to being allowed to return home to settle up any remaining gratuities. Failure to comply should be punishable by death.

Considering tipping isn’t a legal requirement because then it would essentially become a tax, that’s never going to happen.

I think at the end of the day neither of us can judge how hard eachothers job is

 

I work in warehousing which is rediculously fast paced and most days cant do anything after work. I think ppl also under estimate the strenousness of these industrial jobs also. Ur on ur feet as well all day, moving fast, sometimes bending for wrapping etc and carrying stuff with weight etc 

 

I have never done serving so i cant say but it doesnt seem significantly worse in terms of physical demand because the multi tasking, fast pace on ur feet is very much there also but ur also bending and carrying weights i just wish it payed better 👀

Respect the culture and customs of the country you're visiting. 

It's that simple. If tipping is the norm? Tip. If it isn't? Don't tip.

You can hate it all you want, but respect it. Or don't visit that country. 

If you want other people to respect your local customs, you should do the same when you're abroad.

Today I made nearly 700 dollars. I work in a very fast paced and high volume restaurant and I wouldn't do this very strenuous job that takes an incredible toll on my body physically and mentally if I weren't making at least 40 dollars an hour. I am currently in bed with icepacks and heating pads from the pain of working such a physical job. Nobody, and I mean nobody who works at a desk works as hard as I do.

I used to work as a waiter, and as a European I am glad that I dont have to kill my body or stress over tips just have a basic income.
