World Cup tourists aren’t leaving tips - they don’t know how things work in the US

Restaurants in places such as Kansas City, Atlanta and Philadelphia have begun adding automatic 20% gratuities to checks, during the tournament, according to industry groups and restaurant operators.

Supporters say the move is intended to protect American servers who rely heavily on gratuities and avoid confusion for visitors unfamiliar with American tipping norms.

At McCarthy’s Pub NYC, waitress Louise Daggett said serving the international crowds has been equal parts exhausting and entertaining.

“Everyone has been really sweet . . . they’re loud and happy, very nice,” Daggett told The Post. But many are baffled by the American ritual of signing receipts and calculating tips.

“It’s very different. And a lot of people haven’t been leaving tips,” she said.

That can sting when a large group orders countless pints over several hours. “There’s been a lot of tables that have come in and had a tab of almost $700,” Daggett said.

She says most visitors aren’t being rude — they really don’t know how things work here.  “They do ask”.  “They say, ‘Oh, how do I do this?” I explain to them that tipping is big here in the city, and it’s a nice habit to do.”

In many countries, there is minimal to no tipping because European restaurants pay staff like any other profession and workers don’t rely on tips, so customers assume they’ve already paid for service.

I remember going out as a kid to the Cheesecake Factory with my parents friends who were visiting from New Zealand and they picked up the bill that was like $200 and they were just gonna leave like $5 as a nice gesture and I was like umm you really should be leaving closer to $40 on a bill like that

I don’t know why it’s this way in the US. Like just ****ing increase the price if you have to. The excuse is always that you’ll get worse service but like… then they would just lose their job so what’s the difference

The worst is, if what happened in my Province is any indication, its so ingraned in culture that if you ensure higher pay, the expectation will still be there anyway

 

Sometime before the pandemic (i forget which year I think was mid 2010s) the Province of Ontario mandated that tip earners had to be payed the minimum wage like everyone else. Some thought this might reduce tip expectations or the amount prompted on the screen. It didnt. They raised menu prices to cover the higher hourly wages but kept the tips anyway, in fact they steadily still rose overtime. In 2010 15% was standard. Now u gotta do 18% to 20% minimum.

 

Dont get me wrong. Minimum wage around $18/h is not really a livable wage and a little extra is warranted. But maybe the percentage could of dropped. Instead of 18% to 20% with a full minimum wage maybe we could do 10% to 12%. But it didnt happen. The tip expectations stayed exactly the same and the trend to slowly rise over time continued

I went to a restaurant the other day where you order at the counter and bus your own table. I was genuinely shocked that their tip suggestions on the card reader were 10, 15, and 18% in stead of so many places that start at 15 or 18 and go past 20. I actually tipped more than I might have otherwise because I appreciated how they weren’t being so insane. That’s how bad it’s gotten!

To be completely honest the huge premium you pay to have someone serve u isnt worth it. I prefer places you pay at the counter and grab the plate, drinks ur self etc.

 

But nowadays u tip for that too maybe just a slightly lower amount so i dont even know if it matters anymore but in the past I preferred it if it meant no tip.

 

I get what ur saying that when they are more reasonable u can feel better about tipping. I went to a sushie place that you order and pay on the counter and dont automatically pay tip but they still brought it to you when it was done if you choose to eat in. I ended up leaving a bit in cash on the table cuz it felt like semi-restaurant service and i should leave something plus it was very good. But what i left was just under 10% but again, i left it by choice and actually felt kinda good

 

Unfortunately this place is like 45min away, i discovered it when going to a mall in another city (but the place wasnt at the mall it was nearby in a plaza). So its too far to justify going unless im already in the area

 

My city never has great deals or places anywhere i dont know whats up with that. We have a reputation for being the Toronto suburb with the cheapest people yet somehow places that wanna target a budget conscious population never open up in my city

 

The best outlet malls too or liquidation stores exist everywhere exept my city. What the actual FFFFF

I mean… people should be pressuring their government to up their wages or get a statutory minimum wage in place like pretty much almost every civilised country has. I wouldn’t tip either you’re doing your job and not going above and beyond.

In my country it's like a "gift" if the attention was good. If it was that case, I usually leave a 10-15%, and all the people I know leaves the same.

Because it is not their issue they dont get paid like they should. If you serve well you will get a tip, as a bonus. Otherwise not
