On the other hand, especially in Europe I’ve encountered really rude service for no reason, and I can only assume it’s a matter of employees not having to work for a tip.

I can tell you from experience from my hospitality and retail days it’s usually because most (not all admittedly) Americans are overbearing and are used to a certain catered to service because people NEED the tips — so they tend to be extra critical, send food back, demand new drinks be made, complain about the tequila in a drink (a specific example I once had about the calories and amount of alcohol in a tequila soda still irks me), ask about the carbs in a meal, expect us to bag your groceries, bring your fast food to your table, carry stuff for you around a store. The list is endless atp. Those are just minor examples but sometimes Americans are used to false positivity because otherwise they don’t make money and we just… don't baby people because minimum wage is minimum wage and you get it based on hours worked not standard of work.

Us not being cartoon happy begging for money like Americans are isn’t rude it’s just us being normal people lol trying to get on and then enjoy our lives. Work to live instead of live to work like Americans do.

I am a server and I can tell you that there is no salary or wage high enough to incentivize me to work in a restaurant without tips, and I guarantee you servers in Europe do not make as much as I do. Today I made nearly 700 dollars. I work in a very fast paced and high volume restaurant and I wouldn't do this very strenuous job that takes an incredible toll on my body physically and mentally if I weren't making at least 40 dollars an hour. I am currently in bed with icepacks and heating pads from the pain of working such a physical job. Nobody, and I mean nobody who works at a desk works as hard as I do.

genuine question, since tipping is basically the norm and obligated in service in the US couldn’t you not run yourself ragged and still make that money since people would tip out of obligation? Or perhaps get a salary job in an office where you’ll feel your hard work goes further?

40 dollars an hour for a menial unskilled labour job is also kind of a crazy expectation everywhere else in the world — that’s about the equivalent of a £65k a year job in the UK (before tax) and would be considered a high paying job you would need education, connections and work experience of upto a decade in for, something akin to a Lawyer, Senior Engineer or Senior Civil Servant here which would be considered “middle class wealth” BUT I guess it goes with not having decent healthcare costs, the inability to unionise (which is still CRAZY to me since almost every workplace has a union here), a lack of a proper work week (40 hours max contracted with 2 days off a week) and not being paid for sick days or having paid holidays/vacation.

Kinda crazy to think about how bad the US actually is to exist in financially y’all are getting screwed over omg

I'm not trying to diminish your effort or your work, but OMG 😐 $700 is more than the minimum wage in my country 😐 I'm a public employee, which is a good salary, usually double that of a regular job, and I earn $60 a day between all the paperwork, lawyers, documentation, etc. 🫠

$700 for a shift is amazing, but not every day you have a very good shift and honestly a good comparison would be by your yearly net than by a shift or hourly wage.
Also in Europe they have health insurance and more protections that you don't have, the job is highly regulated by each country and by the European Union, they have proper holidays, maximum working and rest hours and so on so they will not end up in pain from the job.

I live in Uruguay, and honestly, it's an expensive country; everyone knows that. A typical salary for a waiter, cashier, or salesperson in a store is around $662 a month. Jobs requiring a university degree (depending on the field) usually pay around $2,000 (all before taxes). I started this month as an administrative assistant in the country's judicial sector, and my salary is approximately $1,500 a month for about 6 hours and 15 minutes a day (11 dollars per hour 😅) Monday through Friday, but I can work overtime. Anyway, I had to pass two tests (a 380-page written exam and a psychological one; out of 900 people, only 51 passed 😅—they're designed for a low pass rate). But it's the best job I've seen in my country. We have the right to take exams every two years to be promoted, change departments depending on our qualifications, and so on.

It's funny and sad at the same time that your salary is considered pretty high for LATAM.

I have friend in costa rica, he's working at a call center at Amazon and he earns something like $7 per hour.

I mean, I guess it's okay. It could be worse 😅 The bad thing is the price of rent and food; that's the most expensive. But in terms of healthcare, for example, while there are different private hospitals (whichever one you choose if you have a formal job), there's also public healthcare. And some healthcares are pretty good! For example, I'm epileptic and I need 11 boxes of medication a month. If I bought it at a pharmacy, I'd spend about $600; at the hospital, I pay about $30. And there are also public schools, colleges, and universities, etc. I'd say the "good and the bad" are fairly balanced at least un Uruguay.

Yeah I have been dealing with this a lot. I had a massive table that was a 200$ tab just including alcohol, not their food, and they didn’t leave a single dime.

people don’t realize in situations like this, it actually costs me money to serve them. When I tip out the host she takes a 5% of my sales and since that table had a 430$ tab, which means I spent 20$ of my own money just to serve them. Also the fact that they are taking up space in my section where other tables could have been had we not had to push 4 of my tables together to fit them there.

And I’m kind of tired of people telling me it’s my fault bc I chose that job. I’m in school and it’s basically my only option and the only industry I can find that allows me to still work while going to school during the days, or if I need to call out for any reason ( homework, studying, or just a rest day) I can without penalty because everyone else just takes it as an opportunity to make more money. Someone has to work the job, and if you are against tipping you can simply go somewhere else, or order your food to go. We have plenty of places in Atlanta that do not require being served and I don’t get annoyed at all if I don’t get tipped on my To Go’s.

So it's better than costa rica in some sense, I lived there for 5 years and the public health was not so great so I paid privately.

But the rent and food, actually anything else, is very expensive, we left there when covid was dying because the impact of the pandemic was very very bad.

It shocked me (in a bad way) when I was in the US. Now I just assume everything is 20% more expensive whenever I visit.

Well, post-covid all prices went up. But it's okay, Argentina it's at the side, and literally, it's a chaos.

Bruh even some construction workers dont make that much...

Jobs these days are fast paced and exhausting in general. Most of us dont get tipped for it when were not in food service and we get way less per hour than that

The irony is that being a member of a service staff would immediately become a dog sh*t job if they got minimum wage and tips weren't a thing :laughga:

Wait staff that are good at their job can pull in hundreds of dollars in a single shift where as minimum wage would get them about $100-$200 depending on the state.

I personally don't have a problem with tipping. If I'm getting a service, I expect to pay for that service. It's nice that my payment goes directly to the person providing that service instead of to their bosses

Now, I ain't tipping for things like picking up orders or buying merch at a kiosk but restaurants, barbers, Ubers, delivery, etc? I'm fine with throwing a gratuity to my fellow working class nobody. 15%-30% in their pocket isn't gonna kill me.

I've always thought the vehemently anti-tip crowd came off as snobbish and out of touch anyway

Good on the travellers that took the time to adjust momentarily to tipping for the benefit of the workers welcoming them into their country. No foul for those that simply didn't think about it.

Our wealth flows up and there isn't really a viable solution to the problem right now 'cause instead of feeding millions of hungry people we made one man a trillionaire.

I mean, maybe if more aggressive Democrats keep winning but that momentum is only gonna last a few years at maximum and I fear the lobbies will be able to halt whatever progress we'd otherwise make...

...anyway, lowkey that's why I don't really have a problem with tipping. It's a lateral movement from my working class pockets to another's.
