World Cup tourists aren’t leaving tips - they don’t know how things work in the US

I’m kind of in the middle on this matter. I find it crazy that people expect a tip for making your already overprized coffee or giving you a burger in a paper bag at the drive through. The basic tasks of doing their job, really. On the other hand, especially in Europe I’ve encountered really rude service for no reason, and I can only assume it’s a matter of employees not having to work for a tip.

I’m all for leaving a 10-15% tip for a good service, but it shouldn’t be mandatory nor should people be expected to pay for the employee’s salaries.

Tipping has become too ingrained in near every transaction within the US at this point. It’s more frustrating that now the expectation is to tip PRIOR to the service being completed, so as a customer it seems like you’re forced to tip to get any kind of service as opposed to tipping as a way to reward good service. If you own a business that is service oriented, just incorporate the cost of wages into your items/services.

My general rule is if i have to go to a counter to order + pick up my food, i am NOT tipping. They might get some loose coins in my pocket or something but that's it. 

Now if I am sitting at a table and am assigned a waiter then I will definitely tip. And i usually tip more than necessary because a lot of times i get just as good or better service the next time. 

Luckily where I live people are still paid a base wage on top of receiving tips which also cant be shared with the owner/employer so I never feel bad when I dont tip!

I get and agree with folks saying service workers should just get paid a living wage and tipping should be a gratuity, but refusing to tip because you disagree with the current tipping dynamic is just…kind of shitty lmao. That being said, I do agree that there’s far too much pressure being placed on the consumer to tip, which I think is unfair and doubly exploitative on behalf of the employers/business owners, so I get the frustration there.

I am a server and I can tell you that there is no salary or wage high enough to incentivize me to work in a restaurant without tips, and I guarantee you servers in Europe do not make as much as I do. Today I made nearly 700 dollars. I work in a very fast paced and high volume restaurant and I wouldn't do this very strenuous job that takes an incredible toll on my body physically and mentally if I weren't making at least 40 dollars an hour. I am currently in bed with icepacks and heating pads from the pain of working such a physical job. Nobody, and I mean nobody who works at a desk works as hard as I do.

Totally agree with this. If you want the kind of service you get in America, most servers are gonna want at least $30 an hour to deal with what we deal with. 

I agree when it comes to certain entities asking for tips that it has gotten out of hand in that sense and I think that’s where people’s frustration really comes from lately. 

The single mom of 3 that just waited on you hand and foot for 2 hours has ZERO control over a pay system that was established decades ago. If you suddenly expected every restaurant to pay servers by the hour, all the servers will either quit and/or the restaurant will go under because of increased labor wages and decreased business due to price hikes.

There’s a reason sit down restaurant service in America is so much better and more attentive than in other places, if you wanna get rid of that then sure, go ahead, don’t tip the kid working to pay for college or the single mom of 3 if that relieves your anger towards a system that you nor the server have control over

If you go for a sit down meal at a restaurant, expect to tip for the bottom to top service you volunteered to receive. There are to go options for a reason. “Go get a different job!”: Who is going to serve you then when you just wanna sit down and eat and have everything else taken care of lol. No one!

I think tipping should be illegal. In Canada it kills me each time you go to some places where the person behind the counter does absolutely nothing- and it says enter tip amount. And me being me I feel wrong if I leave it at Zero  fast food places... I know they get minimum but they ask for tip everytime. 

'then when it comes to restaurants you usually get the bottom of the barrel effort from the staff but then expect a 20%+ Tip and ... ugh just pay everyone and outlaw tips. Everything being expensive as hell already and getting taxed into oblivion, to then be asked for a tip

The US needs to raise their minimum wage about $10 an hour and abolish tips for good tbh. As a country where tipping isn't even a thing, let me tell you, the whole system is way more convoluted than you think and things work a lot better without it. Employers should be paying their staff NOT the customers. Workers should not have to worry about their pay fluctuating week to week, or face the risk of getting paid poorly because the customers decided so. And employers shouldn't have to worry about 'well how will they stay motivated without tips?' because that's exactly what a floor manager is for, to make sure things are running smoothly and the staff are doing their jobs. Everyone else does it. Get with the times America

That being said, when you're in America, TIP the damn staff, they need it

'The kind of service you get in America' felt so dystopian and gross to me as a tourist. The way staff are putting on a whole show, calling you sir and maam, with a fake cheesy smile, all the while you can tell they're run ragged. It looked like the movie Smile. Creepy as hell

EMPLOYERS. NEED. TO. PAY. THEIR. STAFF for the service that's expected of them. That's exactly why fine dining restaurants charge more, because they pay the staff more for higher quality service. Oh wait that's right.. in America the restaurant owner pockets the extra money the restaurant charges instead of passing it onto their staff, who are expected to earn it all from tips. Capitalism at it's finest

I'm a waitress in Australia at a 5 star hotel and I'd probably make bank if there was a tipping culture here. So I get it when some American servers say they don't want it to go away. 

But then I go to eat at a restaurant and I'm glad there's zero expectations for it

Im a former server who depended on tips to live.  That said, i hate our tipping culture.  THAT said, it is what is for now and all of these hose cities’ restaurants should be adding 20% grat to all checks to take care of these servers and bartenders.
