Yeah but just because it’s consensus doesn’t mean people didn’t arrive there organically lmao. There are songs on each of the albums from 2008-2019 that I like, but they’re just not great on the whole, imo.
 

RH is probably the strongest out of all of them, but I think the production holds it back (the Avicii version of the title track clears the studio version and would’ve preferred if L4L had stuck with a more modern electro 90s house). I appreciate the ambition of MX (I dig GC + DB, the Tracy Young mix of Crave is a bop), but I still don’t really love it on the whole.

honestly she's an a$$hole lol Madonna really only chased trends after putting in *20 years into the industry* when she was firmly middle-aged and the industry wanted to push her out in favor of Gaga. But even then i wouldn't call Madame X trend following (it's not amazing, either, but it's not a follower imo). Madonna moves. that's her thing. She embraces culture and always has. I think it's incredibly mean-spirited to reduce her career and accomplishments like that especially when Linda herself would barely know a fraction of it having had more success as a songwriter for other superstars than being one herself. Frankly, most of Linda's career is indebted to Madonna since the girls she wrote for wouldn't be there if Madonna wasn't there first so she can take several seats.

Also the charli comment makes no sense and just sounds like an old person name dropping the newest big name. What does Madonna's sound have to do with Charli's at all? lol

I mean, I don’t even gaf about the reductive comment because I think it was an attempt to generate a feud Madonna viewed as mutually beneficial (and borne out of a certain degree of legitimate insecurity) and I still think Perry’s comments are broadly true. In the video, Perry acknowledges that Madonna was a pioneer for the first half of her career and has only begun trend chasing since 2008 and characterizes it as a weakness, which, while harsh, isn’t *entirely* wrong, given that I think Madonna did shrink into trying to emulate younger artists (Britney, Gaga to a degree) because she only felt strong enough to buck convention when she knew she still had commercial viability in an ageist/sexist market. I’m not saying that to justify those commercial attitudes, but I have personally always found it a bit disappointing that Madonna’s work got a lot safer/insular after COADF when I think she could’ve easily continued down a route closer to ROL/Music/AL in terms of maturity and musical experimentation. I think MX was a step in the right direction, albeit musically inconsistent (though conceptually interesting), but she still strikes me as having been rudderless for some time.

Well she didn’t lie. It’s embarrassing what Madonna has done to her legacy after Confessions 1. It’s like she takes it as a challenge to come up with terrible albums.
