During a new interview with The Rest is Entertainment, McCartney was asked about what modern-day societal archetypes baffle him, which led to him giving his thoughts on influencer culture.

He explained, “I think a lot of this influencer stuff – I just don’t really get it, because I’m not that generation. But you can’t help seeing it. My wife will be looking at Instagram and showing me something, and then one of those will come on.”

The 83-year-old continued, “I think it’s funny – and I suppose it always happened – but people who don’t seem to be particularly talented are incredibly famous. Billions of hits and views.”

The legendary musician did concede, “You’ve got to be careful about saying that, because it makes you sound very old-fashioned,” before adding, “Which I am.” x

He’s talking more about “influencers” that are famous for being hot, stylish or w/e

Yes, but theres a difference between a micromanaged plant that is a well watered product vs random fame to to viral content

Plants at least often had some degree of talent. Influencers have a capability if taking mediocraty or even outright garbage to the next level

Take Brintney Spears for example. 100% manufactured but still iconic and talented in her own way nevetheless.

Executives were careful who they chose to invest a lot of money into turning marketing so manufactured or not, you had to have something about you worth capturing people. Now its easier to absolutely suck in every way and still get famous by chance or stripping nude online in all ur videos :air:

Ex: why is every high viewed video of a dad holding his baby always a muscular dad in his underwear? :madge:

Most singers are also known for being hot though, it's not just influencers or whatever

Beyoncé might be the beautiful exception who would still be successful if she was ugly to people. But Rihanna, Britney, Taylor, Katy, Justin Bieber and many others, I don't see them being successful if they were considered ugly.

Beyoncé had the vocals chords of a century. Gaga had the audacity and the artistic vision for history books despite being considered ugly with a weird nose. Adele managed to break through despite being fat, therefore ugly to the GP. And there must be a couple others as well, buy usually, the GP heavily relies and the artist's physical appearance.

That's also why so many pop artist just fade into oblivion... they get older, people find them unattractive and throw them off.

So yes, he's right in what he says but I don't agree with his sentiment of it being a terrible thing from influencers and stuff. Like Gaga said, fame is something you choose (if you manage to achieve it obviously.) It's just fame, it doesn't have to be linked to talent. Some huge talents are trash human beings too. I genuinely don't believe in the saying that only talented people should be famous. Politicians are famous, journalists are famous...

Not quoting you to argue or anything, it's just that your words made me think of all of that

I think Gaga’s attitude has always held the tension between “anyone can have the confidence + ambition of a famous person” and the belief that your spotlight is something that you earn through hard work and skill, tbh. Even though she somewhat ironically embraced the culture of fame and celebrity at the beginning of her career, I think she always viewed it as a means to the end of platforming her talents and not as an end unto itself and I have a sneaking suspicion that she is probably fairly contemptuous of people who are famous for the sake of being famous (which I think is the epitome of LA “influencer” lifestyle).

I think her interest in the Warholian model of fame only really served the function of defeating her own imposter syndrome (“there are people who capture the spotlight with nothing to say and no talent and if society deems them worthy of it, you, as a person with talent and a vision, are certainly worthy of it”).
