But rock music is more idgafness from the biggest idgaf artist out there (and we don't know what the album will be like yet), and HML as a song (or considering the album it is in) never once touched actual heavymetal, despite having a little rock-art throughout. That’s just so not her. Theater mother. But what I find interesting is that to the best of my knowledge, Charli never was around rock really whereas Gaga as we know was around a lot of metal scenes in New York. And Lüc embodied heavy metal and its scene to her so while rock music takes on a tone of boredom with pretensions from the outside, HML’s tone is longing from being within and transcending it and wondering if their ego’s can withstand that. I think for both it was about approaching the feeling of the genres and scenes, but in Charli’s case she chose to use the aesthetics of the genre to make her point whereas Gaga decided to seek out the feeling through electronic pop music. im curious where the charli album goes bc by no means do i think it’ll be a rock album but i do think it would be dumb to write off potential influence of the tracks she did for wuthering heights Similar to Gaga and Joanne 2 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Is it funny? Only in the sense that it’s being marketed as a song. Did she intentionally make garbage to flop because she’s too cool to be popular? Definitely not. Is the chorus really just the beginning glitch of Hold My Hand followed by “ck music?” Yes. Does this make the discourse of how “mid” RUNWAY and SOAW are now irrelevant because they’re both solid gold compared to “Rock Music?” Of course. From Brat summer to Crap summer. Which I think is also true and is decidedly different from the strawman version you constructed I also explicitly stated that I was criticizing people who didn’t recognize the irony and ragebaiting as intentional (which I think misses the point of why the song is the way it is), but never said that was the only reason why someone wouldn’t like the song lol. Her baking in certain anticipated reactions (“wtf this isn’t rock! this is genre fetishization/commoditization/poser behavior”) and me pointing out that the song provokes and anticipates those reactions isn’t saying the song is above criticism, it’s just acknowledging deliberate provocation and people playing directly into it. Visuals are cool, she has a good team around her, but this song is very much post-BRAT post-commercialization and it shows with its manufactured sound and video. I find this interesting since she's always been a trendsetter and ahead of the curve. Becoming commercial at a massive scale comes with a price and for her, right now, the sacrifice is authenticity and edginess for mass appeal. The ironic title and lyrics are too close to BRAT - where's the pivot? It's a little too self-aware in it's irony and rage bait that it falls flat, to me. Lastly - it's OKAY not to like a song or a direction. I'm not going to "cancel" Charli or anyone who disagrees with me. Every artist has ebbs and flows with good moments and bad moments.
