Israeli settlers shoot up a school on the West Bank

For anyone that’s interested, here’s a draft of a script I’d you want to reach out to your Senator or Representative:

Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m a constituent from [City], [State].

I’m calling to express my outrage regarding the US’ continued support of war crimes committed or sanctioned by the state of Israel

This week, Israeli settlers, flanked by IDF forces funded in part by U.S. taxpayer dollars, defended settler terrorists who murdered a 14-year-old boy, killed a 32-year-old man, and opened fire on a school in the West Bank.

That is the reality my tax dollars are helping support.

This and the continued leveling of Gaza and attempted ethnic cleansing of the region is a moral red line for me.

I do not consent to a single cent of my money going toward this.

I am calling on [Senator/Representative] [their name] to support an immediate cutoff of U.S. military aid to Israel until:

Violence by settlers supported by or in collaboration with the IDF ends.

The occupation of the West Bank ends.

Innocent Palestinian civilians are protected, as prescribed by international law.

International accountability is enforced and meaningful structural reforms take place within Israel, to and including the end of apartheid in the region and justice for the victims of their war crimes.

And meaningful steps are taken toward Palestinian freedom, agency, and statehood.

I will be paying close attention to how the [Senator/Representative] votes and speaks on this issue moving forward.

Thank you.”

Thank you so much for this :holdmyhand:

Do they put something in their water or something? I seriously cannot fathom how a group of people can be so thoroughly evil and devoid of all human emotions. How do people even go on about and live their daily lives? How can the citizens of a wealthy, well-educated country normalize this kind of medieval barbarism and see no issue with partaking in it? I'm genuinely shocked at the levels of brainwashing.

The settlers are religious extremists and are *heavily* propagandized. Here’s a video of the “Godmother” of the settler movement outright admitting that brainwashing is essential to the propagation of Zionism and the settler movement.

I mean, the entire Dem caucus (save 7 of them, I believe) voted against a military sale to Israel this week, so I think this is a lot closer to being a reality than you’re suggesting. Israel is also sitting at a disapproval rate of 60% with the American population, with a majority of both parties disapproving of them in light of the war in Iran, so this will be very difficult (if not outright impossible) for most politicians to ignore.

Yeah, people who criticize Israel are winning the party and will control it eventually but our leadership is out of touch with that fact.

Senate minority leader Schumer encourages the maximum military aid to Israel 'cause he conflates his own Jewish identity with defending the "Jewish state" and minority speaker Jefferies has refused to refuse AIPAC donations despite them crushing progressive candidates across the nation in favor of pro-Israel centrists.

I think the hoop we're preparing to jump through is whether or not we can change our party's leadership (or, less likely, change their minds) AND have control of congress at the same time to oppose the Iran war, the fallout of the war, and aid to Israel.

Or, I guess the tl;dr of it all is I have little faith in the Democratic party as a whole, proper party moving cohesively and effectively in the correct direction when support for Israel is still so deeply woven into the party's few actual morals/talking points. If losing to Trump AGAIN and the GOP AGAIN specifically because of Biden's handling of Gaza didn't get them to budge, it's gonna take a total overhaul for the kind of change I'd like to see and that's not easy to do.

Yeah, but Schumer is in the minority here (he’s one of the seven that didn’t vote to block the military sale). I agree that it’s something that’s going to take work, but the tide is turning very quickly and I think it’s going to be unavoidable for the leadership of both parties. Even J Street (one of the most powerful domestic Jewish lobbying firms, often aligned with AIPAC) came out in support of restricting or conditioning Israeli military aid on the basis of war crimes they’ve committed.

I don’t think you’re being a pessimist, I just think it’s weird and almost disorienting to move from Things Never Happen to Wait A Minute, Are Things Happening? Like it’s obscene that we had to witness 2+ years of ethnic cleansing in Gaza (not to mention the decades of oppression prior to 2023) and for the US to be drawn into a losing war with Iran because of Israel for the US population and political class to change it’s attitudes towards US allyship with them, but I think the tide is genuinely turning and turning pretty quickly.
