English is not my mother tongue, so please be aware that I might have misunderstood some parts of your response. Anyway, I think I actually answered the question incorrectly. I gave an answer to the question “Gaga’s best song bridges in your opinion” rather than iconic bridges. Iconic means something emblematic of a genre or era, widely recognized and admired, and considered representative of that genre or era. It refers to something renowned, legendary, or classic that holds enduring and symbolic significance. The best bridges from Mayhem are from one of these songs: Abracadabra, Perfect Celebrity, Killah, Don’t Call Tonight, or The Beast. There are good bridges in other songs from Mayhem, but if we are talking about the very best ones, it is definitely one of these, subjectively. The most iconic bridges are probably from one of these songs, though I might be missing one or two: Bad Romance, Poker Face, LoveGame, Just Dance, Born This Way, or Judas. I actually don’t know what makes or breaks a bridge for me. I just can’t put it into words, and there isn’t really a clear metric for it. It’s about the overall musical and lyrical experience, but it doesn’t always have to be consistent. For example, Garden of Eden is a fine song in my opinion, but the bridge is bad because it drags on a decent song with what feels like another pre-chorus lyrically, and I don’t enjoy the musical experience in that part. It takes away rather than adding something. But in The Beast, she can repeat a line from a verse four times and I’m instantly hooked. The way the song builds up, the way she delivers the lines, the outcome, and the way the song has been progressing up to that point all come together to make a great bridge. It’s a strong musical and lyrical experience. It doesn’t feel like it’s dragging. I actually look forward to that moment while listening to it, and I can’t say the same about Bloody Mary’s bridge going “dum dum da di da” or whatever. I still feel like I haven’t made myself very clear. I can’t fully explain it, but I know how I feel. Thank you for your reflections! English is my mother tongue, and even I misunderstand the majority of my own communication—you are completely good Brilliant notes on the distinction! To expound a bit on the “iconic” scope, I would add “artist” to the list of emblematic (along with era and genre), as artists develop and extend their own creative trajectory or identity, their work enters into conversation with the enduring and symbolic significance of the other eras or genres it shares the anthology or narrative with—or the overarching umbrella of the artist’s iconography itself (if that makes sense), and your selections speak to that association as well. “I actually don’t know what makes or breaks a bridge for me. I just can’t put it into words, and there isn’t really a clear metric for it. It’s about the overall musical and lyrical experience, but it doesn’t always have to be consistent.” “I still feel like I haven’t made myself very clear. I can’t fully explain it, but I know how I feel.” To the contrary, your response registered with resonant lucidity; it actually helped clarify how I engage with music, or how you explain the back-and-forth with the bridge, gave verbal form to how that verve feels. You also echo a sense of integrity with how bridges fit with their song (or “does this feel integral or necessary or natural, does this bring me closer to the source or soul of the song; or does this bridge break away or pull me off-shore, does this bridge corrode the experience or creative expression“); so, how you captured it was quite clear and illuminating.
