Tourette's activist shouts N-word during BAFTAs

A Black woman who is a crew member from Sinners said he shouted out the N-word three times yesterday, including once at her. In her words, "The situation is almost impossible."

[Edited to add: her name is Hannah Beecher, and she's the production designer for Sinners; you can read what she wrote here: https://deadline.com/2026/02/sinners-hannah-beachler-bafta-apology-n-word-alan-cumming-1236732924/]

Both things can be possible:

He couldn't control what came out of his mouth and has no ill intent. But at the same time, being called that word is psychologically traumatizing and humiliating to the recipients of the slur. One doesn't negate the other.  In other words, we can be sensitive to the person's disability while also being sensitive to the hurt his outburst caused.

The real shame here is BBC not censoring the slur in their broadcast (which was delayed, not live) and on their YouTube page, especially after they censored "Free Palestine." Also, Alan Cumming's apology was weak sauce and could have been better worded to acknowledge the damage caused by the word.

Editing his shout out is equal to remove him from existence.

This is his condition, his disability, we all can be grown ups for once and stop being offended by everything and for everything.

He was there for a reason, for acceptance, even the worst parts of his condition, and we as a society failed miserably.

The amount of ableism online over this is astounding.

So two things can be true: he is not able to control what he says, and for that, there should be understanding and some grace; however, it is also unfair to not think about how it must feel for Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo. They were subjected to the nastiest, most racist remark anyone could make about them in front of not only that entire room, but the world.

To my knowledge, John Davidson has yet to directly come out and apologize about his outbursts, which is shocking imo. Frankly, I don’t understand why people are using *this* instance as a “someone’s mental disability shouldn’t define their actions or character” moment. This conversation has been happening for as long as I can remember. I’ve felt like people generally came to the understanding that even though a person might have a disability, it doesn’t change the results of the actions themselves. So yes, Davidson should be given grace and understanding considering his condition, but it doesn’t change the fact that what he did completely humiliated Jordan and Lindo.

I’m sorry, but what?? The *least* the BBC could’ve done was edit out his shouting. They edited out a “Free Palestine” shout out, but they couldn’t edit out someone yelling the N-word?

He was still at the ceremony and he was still being honored. Editing out his outbursts wouldn’t have been “removing his existence.”  I think the notion that editing out obscenities from the show is somehow equivalent to dehumanizing and devaluing him as a person is extreme. It would’ve been an accommodation. Considering the fact that he left the show after this incident, it’s clear he was embarrassed by it. If anything, I’m sure he would’ve liked it if the BBC edited it out because then he wouldn’t have to deal with everyone online talking about it.

OBVIOUSLY it was uncomfortable for people on stage.

That's WHY it's humiliating for the person who had the incident.

Agreed entirely.

I think the production team failed in their duty of care by leaving the specific tic in.

Someone screaming Free Palestine willingly is not equal to a person with Tourette screaming the n-word unwillingly.

Just the idea to give the same situations the same weight is absurd and shows how out of touch people are.

A shout-out is still a shout-out. The intention is lost when you're doing it in front of this many people. I'm sure there were people in the room who didn't understand the full context and just thought some random person was shouting insanely racist remarks at two Black men on stage.

The point is that the BBC was willing to edit things out of the show, so clearly they could've edited that out too. And again, it wouldn't have been erasing his existence; it would've been an accommodation. If he f*cking left the show after that, it means he was embarrassed by it. Keeping it in only humiliated him and Michael & Delroy further.

Yeah but in real life situations, we don’t have the luxury to edit these comments out and this is a moment of education and understanding from our part.

We don’t know why he left the show, either because he was embarrassed or he had a very serious tics episode.

And I’m sure Michael and Delroy are mature enough not to be offended by it, and if not then they lost any respect from me..

At the end of the day - if that tic had been edited out of the final footage the online discourse and the witch hunts wouldn't be happening.

We wouldn't be seeing thousands online debating whether or not disabled people deserve to exist or not. And the person at the center of this wouldn't be getting abuse sent to them.

The production team and broadcasting team failed in their duty of care to these people.
They failed to adequately respond to those who were racially abused as a result of the tic - the apology they made Alan Cummings give was inadequate and improperly targeted and I think the black community are right to call out it's focus on the audience not the 2 presenters.
They also failed to adequately protect a guest with a disability and have enabled an unwilling tic to become an international media incident which is incredibly harmful to the 2 presenters, the man with tourettes and the communities these people are from.

What could have been an easily contained moment has become an online debate where people are openly advocating for eugenics because disability makes them uncomfortable. And it's happening at the expense of 3 people who could have handled this far more quietly among themselves.

Small update, via Variety:

The BBC has apologized for not editing out a racial slur from the BAFTA Film Awards‘ tape-delayed broadcast and will now remove it from the version of the ceremony on iPlayer.
[...]
After pulling the BAFTA Film Awards from iPlayer early Monday afternoon, a BBC spokesperson said: “Some viewers may have heard strong and offensive language during the BAFTA Film Awards. This arose from involuntary verbal tics associated with Tourette syndrome, and as explained during the ceremony it was not intentional. We apologize that this was not edited out prior to broadcast and it will now be removed from the version on BBC iPlayer.”

Yeah the BBC needs to be dragged for this. They could have easily edited it out (as they do) but the prospect of a viral moment was too MUCH for them to resist, huh?

Those two actors did not consent to being used for this public humiliation on all sides. Let’s not pretend this is something that needs to be uplifted.

I feel like the trouble with this is over-intellectualizing instead of accepting the nuance and move on.
Like, yes..... the n word shouldn't have been said.
Most people understand Tourette's and know this was involuntary....

Comment after comment of analysis is not going to change those two facts
