Grammys will implement a new, randomized ballot for the upcoming ceremony

Abracadabra better not get snubbed for SOTY 

This change is for the better tho. Those voters are LAZY. I still can't believe abcdefu got nominated for SOTY. And Die With A Smile probably got snubbed for ROTY because it's under L.

I believe overall this will benefit those who are already big since voters will be even more confused to look in an entire randomized ballot and might just CTRL + F the biggest names they can remember. So Kendrick, Gaga, Sabrina, Bad Bunny and perhaps even huge hits by unknown people can be their first choices.

Alphabetical bias was an insane trend at the Grammys to the point even big contenders (like DWAS in ROTY or Taylor in Pop Solo) could miss cause voters wouldnt scroll all around the list.

But DWAS got nominated for SOTY? 

I think the reason why DWAS didn't get nominated for ROTY was because of timing. It was released towards the end of Grammys Submission and only peaked at no.1 before the actual ceremony. IMO they should have waited to release/submit it for this year and it would have 100% won both SOTY AND ROTY. Abracadabra as deserving as it is, I can't see it winning unfortunately.

if timing was a factor why would it make it into one gf category and not the other? Wouldn't it make sense that it missed both?

I feel like voters will make 2-3 picks of the biggest names this year (which helps Gaga), and then when they dont remember anyone else they will go with whatever they recognize in the top of their own ballot. For the General Field which are 8 nominees, maybe 4 deliberately picked and 4 lazy picks.

nope, SOTY has a different alphabetical rule. Songwriting awards are (well, were) ordered by their tittle, NOT the artsists. 

SOTY - Die With A Smile landed on D 

ROTY / POP DUO - landed on L (Lady Gaga). 

The ROTY was always tough because that one does order by stage name or last name. They submitted it using Gaga's name (L), which was the best choice available. Had Bruno submitted it, it would{ve fallen on M, which isnt much worse than L, but depending on the number of submissions it would have been pushed further down. 

And in Shallows Case, just like The Grammy Guru said in their post, if a song is really good, voters will look for it. I personally think Die With A Smile was bumped from ROTY in favor of Fortnight. Its a conspiracy theory, but since an artist cant be nominated twice in Pop Duo, and Post Malone was nominated alongside Beyonce, that meant Fornight was not eligible, so the academy, licking Taylor's ass as usual, gave her a ROTY nom as a consolation. DWAS was the most recent pick that they could sacrifice and sort of use the timing excuse to make it seem natural.

You make a great point! I totally forgot about Shallow. Honestly, I’m not so sure. My guess is that once the ASIB trailer dropped in May that year, everyone knew Shallow was going to be a hit, which likely helped it land in both categories.

DWAS, on the other hand, came out of nowhere. It didn’t have the same build-up or hype, and took a while to hit #1 which was earlier this year. For ROTY, I think songs need more time to establish themselves as "record-worthy," and DWAS might have been too early for voters to fully consider. But hey, what tf do I know? Lmao

I think last year was just a really stacked one (smash pop songs like Espresso, GLB! And BOAF all probably took votes from it), even "Beautiful Things" did not make it and that was massive!

I can bet money that it was super close tho!

In Shallow year there was still a panel for most categories that picked the top 20 most vote and ultimately chose their nominees from there. I believe Shallow was benefitted from that panel supporting it otherwise it mightve not entered the original top 8.

This panel was abolished in 2022 (same year tony Bennett and gaga overperformed in noms, and I believe much for Tony's alphabetical advantage + the narrative of his farewell) and couldnt help Gaga score all the noms she deserved for DWAS which was released considerably late in the elegibility year.
