The European Commission has rejected the Szekler National Council’s initiative seeking special status for ''Szekely Land''. The Commission concluded that some of the initiative's demands fall outside the EU’s competencies. Other aspects are already covered by the EU’s current cohesion policy, which promotes inclusion, equal treatment of minorities, and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity.

This decision supports Romania’s sovereign right to manage its internal affairs, including territorial and ethnic matters.

Romania rejects such initiatives largely due to national security concerns, as it fear that autonomous provinces could fuel Hungarian territorial ambitions. These fears are amplified by actions from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, like the 2022 incident in which he wore a scarf displaying a map of Greater Hungary which included parts of Romania.

LOVEDRUG

In a federal European Union, in which minorities, like the Hungarians in Romania, possess electoral representation, often constitutionally-guaranteed electoral representation (see the Danes in Schleswig-Holstein, the Germans in Hungary etc.) it's not even remotely within the EU's remit.

The Hungarians in Romania are already swinging elections based on how they vote, they're hardly a powerless minority. Sure, there might be some things that major Hungarian groups want, just as there are a number of things that Scottish people want in British politics or Catalan people want in Spanish politics, but that's what electoral politics is for. The EU only really has a right to intervene when people are being actively oppressed.
