Fine Art Restoration Company will begin a key conservation project at the Church of St John The Evangelist in Wicken. The project will restore the church’s rare papier-mâché ceiling in the chancel.

The ceiling is made of thin papier-mâché lathes coated with a plaster-like material and painted. Over time, sections have loosened due to moisture, and older repairs are failing. Conservators will treat mould and damp-affected areas carefully to preserve the ceiling's delicate structure.

Chris Bull, Technical Director at Fine Art Restoration Company, expressed pride in preserving the unique ceiling. He emphasized its rarity and importance as part of the church’s artistic and spiritual heritage.

The church’s history dates back to 1587 when Wyke-Hamon and Wyke-Dive parishes united under Queen Elizabeth I. The current building was rebuilt in 1758 and underwent further restorations in the 1800s. It was listed as a Grade II building in 1960 for its historical and architectural value.

The chancel ceiling shows clear influence from Gothic Revival architecture. It resembles the vaulting of Westminster Abbey’s Lady Chapel and Oxford’s Divinity School, and the plasterwork of Strawberry Hill House, a key Gothic Revival landmark.

This project reflects the company’s dedication to conserving historic UK sites. Once completed, the restored ceiling will enhance the church’s beauty and ensure its preservation for future generations.
