But who knew about her 5 solo albums before? most of the people didn't even know she had a singing career.

In that case, even Beyonce could have been nominated for Best New Artist for her first solo era.

The BLACKPINK girls are already established in the industry, has a lot of fans, everyone knows who they are and they didn't gain a sudden success, they can easily hit top 10 with minimum marketing..

But you make it sound like Sabrina Carpenter was a full unknown before her 6th album. She already had charted hits like Nonsense and Feather, not to mention that her previous albums weren’t under the radar indie efforts, they were heavily promoted label albums, and she also had the visibility of starring on a popular kids show. So, still hypocritical in my opinion.

This category makes absolutely no sense. They are just bending the rules the way they want every year huh?

I don't think any of the BLACKPINK girls is even deserving of a nomination in the 1st place because they don't bring anything new to the table but still... what a mess lol

its crazy how they let someone like sabrina with 5 flop albums get nominated for best new artist

but these girls cant..........sounds about white to me

artists can still be considered "new" if they achieve significant mainstream recognition after previously releasing music.
an artist can't submitted to this category more than 3 times, including as a performing member of an established group.

All I know is that Gaga was robbed beyond all hell when they deemed her ineligible because was nominated for Dance Recording the year prior. The BLACKPICK girls work hard, I think they deserve to be in the running if they branch off as solo artists regardless of these little rules.

Seems completely fair and reasonable to me. If all 4 members of a group release solo projects at the same time, that means almost all the nominations that year will be taken up by individual group members, leaving not enough spots for people who have always been soloists. That just makes it a farce. Not having any nominations as a group beforehand is a bit weird, though. But the sentiment as it applies to all groups in general seems correct.

But the entire category is a hot ass mess, always has been. So many of the nominees now aren't new, they've been going for years but have only recently had a hit that made them hit the big time. The award should be re-named "Best Breakthrough Artist" but maybe the academy thinks that sounds too amateur and too MTV. Or, as I once saw a comment read when Bon Iver were nominated after being famous for a few years: "Best Artist Who Has Just Recently Come To Our Attention."

They will change the rules next year and nominate Beyoncé for Best New Artist because Destiny's Child never got nominated in that category as a group. :icant:

That's kind of sad because they are finally becoming their own artists it seems? I really dislike Kpop because of how dishonest and manufactured it is, they really are the ultra processed version of the music industry lol. But them going solo seems more like they're trying to discover their own artistry.

It’s fair. They are not new artists, nor was Sabrina or Dua Lipa in their respective nominee years…

So the logic is... Sabrina had 5 or 6 albums but she wasn't famous enough til last year but BLACKPINK's members are already famous so they can't?

What's the point of this category if only famous artists are elegible? If anything, it should be a category to promote the start of a career, but of course, as usual, Grammys are nothing but a popularity contest.

An artist can be submitted for Best New Artist up to three times total as solo act, group combined.
BLACKPINK has already reached that limit so their members are no no longer eligible.
Sabrina Carpenter has been submitted twice, so she remained eligible.
Tate McRae, never receiving a nomination but was submitted 3 times for consideration and was ineligible for this category.
