Bulgaria officially part of the Eurozone

On January 1, 2026, Bulgaria will officially adopt the euro as its national currency, marking a historic milestone as it becomes the 21st member of the eurozone. This move comes after the European Commission and the European Central Bank confirmed in mid-2025 that Bulgaria had met all necessary criteria, including low inflation, stable public finances, and a long-standing fixed exchange rate between the lev and the euro.

Bulgaria has maintained a currency peg to the euro since 1999, so this transition eliminates the need for currency conversions and exchange rate risk. The fixed exchange rate of 1 euro = 1.95583 leva will be locked in during the changeover, giving both consumers and businesses clarity and stability.

Lot of Eastern Europe is like this. I feel like some Europeans believe that bringing these countries closer to the EU's sphere of influence will boost the rights and liberties of Eastern citizens and some Europeans believe that the Eastern countries just bring crime. My mother, who's German, seems to be pretty against all of it, saying these people are moving to established EU countries and causing crime because their countries are poor.

This will be horrible long term for Bulgaria's population. Now all the young people can easily move to other countries and with an already declining population and low birth rate, there'll be hardly anyone left in Bulgaria in 100 years time. So sad

Guys, I think some of you mistake the eurozone with European Union itself. Bulgaria has been part of EU for many years now. Eurozone means we’re adopting the euro currency now.

Honestly, I just figured it made more sense to adopt the currency as an indication of dedication to joining the EU. So assumed Bulgaria was wanting to become a member of the EU and therefore adopted the Euro. Which was ignorant of me.
