Usually mixtape means much loosened project compared to album and ep. These projects are mostly made for fun, more casual. That doesn't really mean low expectations though. Sometimes it can be viewed as a sneak peek or an easy-listen quick guide to an artist's artistry.

like why is she now not in favour when only a couple of years ago she had hits. 

Love in Real Life and Still Bad are both pretty boring singles so I just assume that her label think her new material is not good enough to shake off all the controversy.
