I don't really have any sympathy for the 'Artists choose carefully who they want their collectors to be in order to build their market in the right way' notion

Sad that she was basically a victim of fraud but she DID get paid

If she really cared about the 'no resale within 5 years' thing it would've been contractual rather than basically an off the cuff comment after the sale was agreed and plans were arranged for exchange

I guess it's just common practice among art collectors and since she assumed it was Gaga, an artist, she thought customs would be respected

Honestly I just thought it was funny that the impersonation seemed to be on a facebook/X "my mom knows her cleaner" account level and still seemed to work or she didn't care enough to double check :laughga: I'd never heard about the no reselling practice before

Did you read the article :samanthac:

It was a gallery owner from Hong Kong catfishing as Gaga. The artist's dad saw her painting in an auction post on Instagram and she reached out to Bobby who told her it wasn't Gaga to begin with.

Then she goes on about artists being able to control who owns their work.

what confuses me is why would someone pretend to be lady gaga to buy a painting :laughga:

Yeah I'm a bit confused about the issue. If I could sell paintings for $55,000, you can bet I wouldn't give a f*ck whether it's resold, gifted, put in exhibitions or whatever, as long as I still get credited as the artist. If you own something, then you should be able to do whatever you like with it.

I'm still a bit confused about what the actual damage is in this case, BUT: Have you guys checked out the art?? Emma Webster's work is quite impressive, actually. So thank ü for sharing!

The article says the artist is looking to retrieve the painting. Is she going to refund the $55,000? I do understand that artists want to “curate” who collects them for clout and reputation reasons, but really if you sell something and accept the compensation that you priced it at, it’s not really yours anymore.
