I would release 3-5 Singles first, and as a final the album. After an Album release you dont need to release anymore Singles nowadays. But maybe this is what Lady Gaga did this time 🫡 The music industry won't change their tactics for a few reasons. Singles aren't profitable due to streaming. The margins are just shitty. Neither are music videos now that mtv style channels are truly dead. Streaming killed the video star. The sole focus now of singles is to drive album preorders. Albums now are only profitable if they inspire strong sales on physical. Which is why we're seeing an explosion of variants. Tours have replaced albums as money printers for labels. The days of touring to promote an album are long gone, now album releases are about promoting a tour. And touring is producing crazy returns on investments for big acts - for many it is a better return than they ever got via album sales. The only thing that will make the industry change its approach is a major recession and collapse of the pay later credit industry. Because that will domino outwards and cause a contraction in the touring industry (stadium tours will die instantly), see an increase in free streaming users and a decline in subscription streaming users and it will kill of the physical variant craze. But without that happening, the music industry's profit margin for shareholders has never been better.
LOVEDRUG 10,565
I think the issue is that Gaga's team hasn't really caught up when it comes to releasing singles. Other than a select few (Taylor, Beyoncé) who don't really release a ton of singles with music videos anyway, most artists nowadays release three/four singles prior to an album's release. It's the only way we'd get more than two videos in my opinion. I also still don't understand why we didn't get a music video and full single release along with the album. These days those are almost always hits (Taste, We Can't Be Friends etc.) and often outperform the first single. I loved the Grammy premiere and I think it's one of the best things she's done so I wouldn't have wanted her to delay the Abracadabra video, but if she'd released a video for any of the new songs on release day, I think it would've performed very well.

Then it turns out she filmed abra mv and all a bunch of promos (hot ones, VF lie detector etc.)

But without that happening, the music industry's profit margin for shareholders has never been better. Right. And, I feel like this you've posted a variation of this at least 1/week (if not more) and yet people are still wondering where the next single is and calling things "missed opportunities" and such. Expecting a post-album single from an artist who hasn't done 1 in 10+ years is silly on its own. Taking into account industry trends makes it insane. If artists like Olivia, Billie, Sabrina, etc., who are still establishing themselves rarely - if ever - release post-album singles, why would Gaga, who was able to sell out a World Tour at her lowest point commercially (JWT), and current whose album / era / tour are already among the biggest of the year? Industry people have been gushing over MAYHEM's performance since release, and yet fans were sad over its opening #'s. If there were "missed opportunities," they'd have been corrected by people who actually have a stake in her music's success. Being able to fight with stans on Twitter over which album track is pulling 101,000 streams in its 108th day vs. 102,000 is really not something they care about. Also, it's crazy how many Charts discussions end with people complaining about Billboard using Airplay as part of its formula on the Hot 100, yet the only thing that defines a single is sending it to Radio. There's alreayd been performances and playlisting support on album release week for various tracks on MAYHEM. I did expect, and would love, an additional MV since she did that for both Joanne and Chromatica, but that's about it.

Another variation of this - Katy Perry's 143 flopped by every metric. And the pre-releease singles did just as badly as the album. And although Katy's tour hasn't sold out and in some areas has not performed well in sales - it's still gone ahead which means it's commercially viable and the organisers are confident that merch sales on the day will help boost profit margins. 10 years ago, Katy's tour wouldn't have even been officially announced if the album flopped that hard leading up to and on release. The industry has changed massively due to streaming, and I think the reason why so many people struggle to recognise or appreciate this is that COVID accelerated it. It wasn't a gradual change like the original decline of Vinyl for CD and CD for digital. It does feel like it's happened over night.
