MaybeKermit 4,648
The past few months I've been slowly warming up to HBDYWM tbh, it's a very fun sing-along pop song and can't wait to hear it live. HOWEVER, recently I realized why I've had such a love-hate relationship with this song - and why I didn't vibe with it immediately. The lyrics are just soooooo basic and un-Gaga compared to anything else on Mayhem - main reason for most ppl who don't like the song btw. I've been thinking and thinking and I think my biggest problem with the song is the following line: 'Cause you like my hair, my ripped-up jeans when I hear that lineI just immediately CRINGE. The problem with these lyrics is that (like many people said already) they sound like TYPICAL Taylor Swift words. I think the only thing that would've made me vibe instantly with this song was if the lyrics on that line were a bit more unique to Gaga. Like for example: 'Cause you like my wigs, my ten (or nine? ) inch heels I know it's a bit cliché, but this song is super cliché anyways, and Gaga has been playing a lot into the things that make her GAGA this era, so I feel like it would've been a nicer twist to the song. What would you guys (those who don't like the song) add/take away from the song to like it more ? (also to be clear; this is supposed to be a 'brainstorm' topic, not an attempt to trash this song...) weed 73,353
I like that lyric! and the lyrics in general. It gives me the plot of the Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne music video but he's dating the emo girl but he's like.. insecure about it, dreams of marrying the Taylor Swift
The Ew from Judas 1,334
I get what you’re saying, you make a really good point. I’ve always been kind of in the middle on this song-and some of the lines don’t feel as distinctly her as some of her other work. I don’t know what I’d replace them with, because I think if you go too direct about things she does it could also come off as kind of cringe I really like the tattoo line and I think it’s fun, and I’d love more little things like that-little elements of her that we recognize as hers. AliceAnesthesia 124
I see people name that lyric as something that bothers or cringes them out, i personally never was bothered by it. To me the song is about someone loving the idea of you that have in your head and not the full, real, authentic YOU including the bad parts. I'm not saying the song was intentionally written this way but for me the lyrics emphasize the message. "YOU like my hair, my ripped up jeans" is saying this person likes the superficial, easy to like, easy deal with parts of you. But then I think the contrast between what the lover likes about her + how she really is should be more dramatic ('I got a tattoo for us last week' --> kinda boring? did she really get a tattoo )

REALITY 76,008
I think it's intentionally supposed to be "cringy." I think it was the Las Culturistas interview, but she spoke about how she didn't vibe with the song at first because it was "too pop.” I think she also said the song was "immature," so clearly she recognizes that the lyrics aren't anything special or interesting. I understand that it sounds cringy to some people, but if you look at it through an ironic, campy lens (which I think is her intention), it makes more sense.
