Why wasn't Happy Mistake part of MAYHEM?

I have heard the song is older, possibly from Chroma sessions? It was the only song from Harlequin/Mayhem written and produced with BloodPop.

What people seem to misunderstand about the making of a record is that artists may do several different sessions with different producers until they find the right direction and stick to it. Gaga tends to be working that way, hence people coming up with concepts like "the OG LG5". These are just studio sessions that didn't materialize into any specific project.

I think we can assume she did a session with BloodPop post-Chromatica, and Happy Mistake came out of it.

The little instrumental snippet from the end of the songs that she shared before harlequins announcement still gives me chills. Tbh the whole song does but this particular snippet stucks in my head ever since

Because she preferred to put it in Harlequin. I hope my answer was helpful.

As people already pointed out, the depressive mania in HM is reflective of the mindset she was in pre-chromatica, so it wouldn't accurately represents the current state of mind she's in right now.

I also appreciate that she chose her first solo jazz album to include this undoubtedly vulnerable song, it speaks volumes on how much she truly loves and feels comforted in the genre.

Though i was wondering the other day how if she decides to swap it with one of the other balleds from the existing setlist how it would be kinda weird to sing about how much she craves the love and admiration of the whole world to a sold out arena after otherwise upbeat production. And while I deeply love that song I think it would be such a downer for her and the audience so I'd rather her perform it in an award show or another vegas residency.

Well it must be connected to MAYHEM in a way because it references broken mirrors... Which is you know the theme of the album cover.

It's better than some MAYHEM songs even, let's be honest. It wouldn't hurt to switch out BoG for it. But at the same time it belongs on Harelquin and fits with the other tracks there. Forever an underrated deep-cut.

Pls don’t come for me, but I don’t think it’s really good enough for mayhem :traumatica:  I’ve only ever heard the album version once, and I couldn’t even finish it. I do, however, LOVE the live version from Jimmy Kimmel. IMO that song was meant to be experienced with live vocals!

Generally I agree (as someone who is vocally anti-"OG LG5"), but "Happy MIstake" was actually written during the Chromatica sessions. I was told about the title back in 2020.

It literally was an old, unreleased song. Gaga isn't someone who puts reject songs on new albums, she prefers committing to a solid, consistent vision from a set amount of sessions. I prefer it this way, using old songs on new albums can be very hit or miss. Sometimes, they sound dated or are clearly a very different vibe. It would have fitted, it especially sounds like it's in the vein of Perfect Celebrity, but a slower, sadder take. But ultimately, I think it was best to keep it separate and Gaga's judgement is correct most of the time. It's like her famous quote: "That's why I'm the artist and you're the public." :trollga:

now that I know what it is, it would be SICK if it was an unlisted hidden track on the mayhem physical editions

like imagine, you've played the whole thing, dwas has just ended, and then there's that semi awkward silence after the record "finishes". you're about to take the record off the player until you hear that familiar "dun dun da dun dun dun da dun" of the guitar of happy mistake

I'd literally CRY :traumatica:

I hope she plays it at the mayhem ball tho :vegas:

I want that trophy.

Sonically, yes. It's a very strong track. Thematically, also, yes. It matches the message of Perfect Celebrity perfectly. I also don't know why.

Maybe because the song was so good she wanted a whole era for it. They did expect Joker 2 to be way bigger so this might have been her Oscars performance.

Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

She literally said she almost put Frankensteined on the album and that's a ten year old song at this point :bear:
