I will say though, Francis' fashion was more on theme during his first day. The full white fabric was giving heavenly, angelic, etc.

Leon is giving Satan a little bit, that's definitely too much red, he's barely on theme :partysick:

According to Pedro Salinas, a journalist who investigated sexual abuse cases within the Catholic Church in Peru, the allegations against the new Pope for covering up cases of sexual abuse are false and were made in retaliation only after he filed a report against a Peruvian bishop for corruption. This bishop was member of the Sodalitium, an ultra-conservative Catholic organization that was dissolved by Pope Francis just days before his death, due to allegations of sexual abuse and corruption against several of its leaders.

That’s exactly what I was thinking as soon as I saw the news. If anything it’s just gonna be one more reason to the American ultranationalists/racists and etc to get cocky about having an American pope now. Sigh.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Something is not right here.. and I say that as an American. Well, an American, who hates Trump, but this is just all too coincidental to not have him be involved. What are the odds the first ever American Pope is picked when Trump is president.

First American pope was likely chosen to bring American Catholics back in line. It's day 0 and we already know he's been at odds with Trump and Vance. Religion is waning, they're likely to pick a more progressive Pope to re-align the church with people and bring them back in. I think the institution has realized that in this day and age they can't just outright denounce x y and z due to the flow of information. So the tune has been changed over the past decade to welcome people and try to bring peace. Any religious war in the past was to spread information and force Catholicism on civilizations. That's not how it works anymore, there's more tact to it. So it's likely we'll see more and more religious figures open to minorities, immigration, LGBTQ, etc in order to keep influence. Trump brings too many different people at odds, and its not good when it's everyone against the US. Also, a European-centric institution "falling" to US politics is an insane idea.

One way or another, this should be a win/win if he doesn't "fall in line" with Trump (which is unlikely). People will listen to the head of the Church and it'll peel off Trump support, or they'll listen to Trump and peel off religious support.

His views from Wikipedia:

Church policy

In May 2023, Prevost said that episcopal leadership should prioritize faith over administration.[75] He advocated for stronger Church action against climate change, stating in a November 2024 seminar that "dominion over nature" should not be "tyrannical".[76]

Women

Prevost opposes the ordination of women to the diaconate, arguing it "doesn't necessarily solve a problem" and could create new issues.[77] Commenting on Pope Francis's 2023 appointment of three women to the Dicastery for Bishops, he noted that their perspectives often align with other members but can introduce valuable new viewpoints.[78]

Social and political issues

Prevost is seen as a moderate or centrist.[76][79] In April 2025, Italian newspaper la Repubblica stated that Prevost was a "cosmopolitan" figure and "appreciated by conservatives and progressives" within the Church.[80] Prevost opposes euthanasia, abortion, and the death penalty.[81] He supported Venezuelan refugees in Peru during his time in Chiclayo.[60][82] On the social media platform Twitter, he expressed sympathy for George Floyd and criticized U.S. immigration policies under President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.[83][84] According to voter registration records, Prevost voted in Illinois's Republican primaries in 2012, 2014 and 2016.[85] Unlike Pope Francis, Prevost has not spoken publicly about the war in Gaza.[86]

As bishop of Chiclayo, Prevost opposed "gender ideology" in Peruvian school curricula, stating it promotes "genders that don't exist".[87] In 2012, he criticized popular culture's sympathy for the "homosexual lifestyle" and same-sex families.[87] Prevost expressed reservations about "sympathy for beliefs and practices that contradict the gospel" and did not fully endorse nor reject Fiducia supplicans, a doctrinal declaration concerning blessings for people in a same-sex relationship. He stated that national bishops' conferences should "interpret and apply such directives in their local contexts, given cultural differences".[88]

Actually let's not get too excited:

Wikipedia says that he actually might be anti-LGBTQ+. I cite Wikipedia because the NYT article sourced for this is pay walled, can anyone confirm?

Also, and I haven't seen much evidence aside from comments on social media, but apparently he has accusations of at the minimum protecting abusers in the church in both the US and Peru, or maybe one or the other.

fr countries with much closer connections to Catholicism either historically or contemporaneously haven't had a Pope in hundreds of years (France 600 years, Britain 900 years, Portugal 800 years, Spain 500 years, Greece 1800 years, Holland 500 years) if ever but America gets one the moment Trump is president with a Catholic VP who killed the last Pope? it doesn't add up

I mean there are actually conservative MAGA adjacent Cardinals to choose like Cardinal Burke if Trump had any bearing on Conclave.

But the fact the Cardinal they picked is from a Liberal city, a citizen of Peru, and a long term open critic of Trump in his 1st and current term.

Yeah lets end the conspiracies now about American pressure lol if any Conclave has turned around and said **** you.

they seemed to pick him specifically for how he differs from trump and maga on immigration on race, though. like the choice of an american here seems to be very very particular in having someone who is a bit more moderate but presents ideological difference to trump

He seems ideologically left leaning based on his tweets and retweets. Also, just know that In 2023, Pope appointed him prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and the president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, and created him a cardinal, all in the same year. These roles elevated his prominence as a papal candidate. AKA he is Pope Francis' next gen that Pope Francis chose himself. He must have shared the similar or the same ideology on many issues for Pope Francis to do this.

Well I will just say that he’s got a beautiful surname. Just like the word conclave, Prevost also sounds very unique to me so I’ll give him that.

Other than that, I’ll just see how things go after some time of his papacy then I’ll have an opinion

I think you all maybe need to learn a little bit more about what the Pope actually does and what motivates the Conclave’s decision making process. There’s many good answers for you in this thread already. It was strategy. He is not a Trumpie type, especially on certain key issues, but he is someone that could in theory be able to navigate the natural relationship that a Pope has to have with the President. And that is important. They need someone that Trump can’t bully or control.

But bestie why should I let that get in the way of a good conspiracy ???
