I mean there are actually conservative MAGA adjacent Cardinals to choose like Cardinal Burke if Trump had any bearing on Conclave. But the fact the Cardinal they picked is from a Liberal city, a citizen of Peru, and a long term open critic of Trump in his 1st and current term. Yeah lets end the conspiracies now about American pressure lol if any Conclave has turned around and said **** you. And if you look at how European nations have behaved around the Papacy over the history of European domination of the Vatican - you'd understand why the church hasn't been promoting them. His papacy was clearly chosen bc he is a bit more conservative (though not terribly so; pretty moderate tbh) than francis but presents clear ideological difference to trump on key trump issues like immigration. this was a strategic choice to demonstrate american leadership when we have none and arguably have worse than none tbh. You're reading a conspiracy into a situation that's actually very very strategic and political. The church is presently facing something of a crisis where there's declining church attendance but more religous fervor and rome's influence is slipping in america where evangelicism is basically THE most vocal religious unit atm. choosing this pope is meant to act as counterweight to this rise and try to restore a more normal reputation to catholicism in the U.S. (good luck lol)

The whole church should be dismantled. It's 2025. It matters because the church isn’t going anywhere so our only hope is to see progressive church reformists like Francis (even more so than him now, which we didn’t necessarily get in him in some respects but he is in others, but the cardinals themselves are proving to be relatively progressive) ascend to the highest position so that the church can grow into a more progressive and accepting entity. It will be a long, difficult process but unlike many other sects of Christianity, Catholicism’s structure actually makes it a possibility to change. I think the church should dissolve too. Not because I’m anti-religion (though I practice no religion), but because Catholicism has become a political entity. But that said you and I both know that isn’t going to happen in our lifetimes if ever. So we may as well put a vested interest in the church’s leader and where they guide the church if we’re not going to be able to see it dissolve. There’s many good answers for you in this thread already. It was strategy. He is not a Trumpie type, especially on certain key issues, but he is someone that could in theory be able to navigate the natural relationship that a Pope has to have with the President. And that is important. They need someone that Trump can’t bully or control.

Trump supports are moved by hatred, they will not care if he antagonizes the Pope, as long as he validates their hate, even if they're catholics. Argentina's president called Pope Francis every name under the sun, quite literally. He called him a turd, an emissary of evil, etc, and his conservative supporters didn't care, even though Argentina is a catholic country. Conservatives don't actually care about christian values, and don't actually support the church's spiritual leader, if he doesn't validate their hateful views. If this Pope is anything like Francis, conservatives will be disrespecting him in a couple months, lol You're probably right. Conservatives are spinless lunatics, here in the middle east spiritual leaders are appointed by the government to avoid escalations and uprisings and still when spiritual heads push for government backed agendas labeled as "reforms" which are almost always a fraction of a fraction of human rights other nations have come to consensus over decades ago, the conservatives would just say they're corrupting religion. Both religion and conservatism are deeply rotten and fragile ideologies and i hope to see that the day both are extinguished.
