@monketsharona It would be worth mentioning in the OP that he spent most of his life in Peru and also thanked Peruvians and not people from the US. This is not me calling you out don't worry I just thought it would be worth mentioning lol.

Twitter says:

”Only a few people know this,  but Beyonce was supposed to be the first American pope, but external pressure couldn't make the initial arrangement happen, so Robert Prevost had to fill in.”

This guy served in Peru. He probably dislikes Trump.

He deliberately chose to speak in spanish, not english, during his speech, and sent his greetings to peruvians specifically, not US catholics. He probably feels closer to Peru than the US, both emotionally and ideologically.

Just my assumption based on his speech though, I know nothing about him :partysick:

Well that never stopped trump from claiming unearned credit, but it certainly going to be interesting to see if trump would bash the pope and how would that go for catholic Americans.

Actually let's not get too excited:

Wikipedia says that he actually might be anti-LGBTQ+. I cite Wikipedia because the NYT article sourced for this is pay walled, can anyone confirm?

Also, and I haven't seen much evidence aside from comments on social media, but apparently he has accusations of at the minimum protecting abusers in the church in both the US and Peru, or maybe one or the other.

It won't matter. Trump supports are moved by hatred, they will not care if he antagonizes the Pope, as long as he validates their hate, even if they're catholics.

Argentina's president called Pope Francis every name under the sun, quite literally. He called him a turd, an emissary of evil, etc, and his conservative supporters didn't care, even though Argentina is a catholic country. Conservatives don't actually care about christian values, and don't actually support the church's spiritual leader, if he doesn't validate their hateful views.

If this Pope is anything like Francis, conservatives will be disrespecting him in a couple months, lol

I will say though, Francis' fashion was more on theme during his first day. The full white fabric was giving heavenly, angelic, etc.

Leon is giving Satan a little bit, that's definitely too much red, he's barely on theme :partysick:

It is unclear whether he will be as open to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Catholics as Francis was. Although he has not said much recently, in a 2012 address to bishops, he lamented that Western news media and popular culture fostered “sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the Gospel.” He cited the “homosexual lifestyle” and “alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children.”

We were told one of the frontrunners said "the former century had Nazism and stalinism, now we have the LGBT movement and wokism." :triggered: So a "moderate"  is not the worst we could have I guess?

But it's moderate by the church standards, I copy paste his wiki page that may have errors:

Prevost has opposed the ordination of women to the diaconate, stating not only that it "doesn’t necessarily solve a problem" but that "it might make a new problem".

As a bishop Prevost opposed the inclusion of curriculum regarding "teachings on gender in schools" in Peru, stating that the "promotion of gender ideology is confusing, because it seeks to create genders that don't exist".

An acquaintance of Pope Leo XIV, Jesus Leon Angeles, noted that he cares for Venezuelan refugees in Peru.

In 2012, Prevost lamented that popular culture fostered "sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the Gospel", citing the "homosexual lifestyle" and "alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children". After Pope Francis's 2023 declaration Fiducia supplicans allowed Catholic priests to bless couples who are not married according to church teaching (including same-sex couples), he criticized the practicality of the declaration in parts of Africa where homosexuality is still illegal, saying "our cultural situation is such that the application of this document is just not going to work".
