Oh, I understand the influence aspect. But religion is gonna breed hate and anti-intellectualism regardless of the pope's stances so I'm not personally concerned over the particulars of which head wears the crown atop the throne of delusion. This guy served in Peru. He probably dislikes Trump. 

He deliberately chose to speak in spanish, not english, during his speech, and sent his greetings to peruvians specifically, not US catholics. He probably feels closer to Peru than the US, both emotionally and ideologically.
