hELXIG 42,546
I think it’s different now because it used to be that certain scenes were talked about in a particular way, like we focussed closely on each big movie that came out and talked about it, instead of now where we absorb and forget so much info every day. Scenes like that went old school viral I guess I can’t think of any recently but for me it was Demi Moore’s back splitting open in The Substance I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

NotNightwing 1,668
Honestly I feel like there hasn't really been that many pervasive scenes from films recently, although there have been a few cultural moments arising from films, like barbenheimer, or (trigger warning) Spoiler Minions . I think the only recent movies with enough cultural clout to count are probably Marvel (MCU) movies. Specifically, the Avengers group shots, "I am Iron Man", Thanos' snap. Oriane 20,462
You probably don't have this impression because the movies are more recent and time plays a big role into what is considered being iconic. How young you are when you discover them also plays a big part. I'm sure you'd consider a lot of things from your favorite children cartoons iconic, even if looking back, it was not that great. Some movies from the past 10 years that I can see have this kind of legacy, iconic potential: - The Substance - Anatomy of a fall - Barbie - Knives out - The Banshees of Inisherin - Pearl - Everything everywhere all at once - Jojo Rabbit - Joker - Midsommar - Parasite - Call me by your name - Raw - Get out - La La Land - Your Name. - Inside out And that's only for the famous, widely acclaimed movies. OliviaRodrigoStan 5,113
I think the internet changed the way films impact our lives. Scenes like this: That EVERYONE recognizes, can reference, etc, are unlikely to happen anymore, because the exposure a film can get now, has been atomized by streaming. Back then, if a movie was popular enough, you would be exposed to it, whether you wanted or not, because it was going to be aired on prime time; and all the mainstream media was likely to reference it: comedy shows, magazines, etc, commenting non-stop on that one specific scene. It was easier to over-expose the audience to a particular scene, long enough for it to become recognizable by everyone. Now that the public has so many options, and the idea of the family sitting in front of the TV to watch anything together is no longer a thing, it's harder for any particular film to reach as many demographics as it did before. It can happen through memes, but even those, are unlikely to reach 50+ people. I think when millenials turn 70 or 60, we'll have that again, where many different generations can recognize a scene as "iconic", but it'll happen through memes, IMO.
