Global powerhouse BTS has announced that they will not be submitting for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards.

The seven-member K-pop group announced their decision in a coordinated Instagram story Wednesday local Korean time. “We have decided not to submit to the Grammys this year,” a translation of the message reads.

“I hope that music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language,” the message continues. “Thank you to ARMY and everyone who is always with us.”

BTS’ decision comes just a little over a month after the introduction of a new category for the 2027 Grammy Awards, the Asian pop music performance category. The addition has received mixed reactions in K-pop spaces online, but BTS is the first artist to announce they’re going to sit out of the awards.

The group members’ choice to specify both region and language is relevant, as the category specifics that the songs entered music include “meaningful use” of any Asian language. BTS, in the midst a banner comeback year, was an obvious frontrunner for the new category and have been nominated in other Grammy categories in years past.

it is interesting that Grammys chose “Asian” word for that category. I guess they just wanted to include K-POP which is a huge genre and is not usually supported by most Grammy voters… And then the thinking was - what about J-Pop, and other asian countries? Let’s include them too there! And it resulted in this somewhat cringe “Asian Pop Performance” category

Think you are being too generous.

The grammys create these foreign language categories or expand them every time non-american/traditional western rock & pop acts don't win.

Look at them expanding Latin categories after Bad Bunny won big

But at the same time it means that at least one act from these regions goes home with a Grammy every year instead of having very low chance to win in main categories.

OT: The one good thing coming from this is that BTS fans won't wish awful things to artists that won over BTS. I unfortunately remember BTS fans wishing for Gaga to be raped again and for Ariana to be bombed after ROM won over some BTS song...

Its seperate but not equal. 

And its done to deliberately prevent these acts having a chance in the unfiltered mainstream categories.
