howsAnnie 361
I am in love with Mayhem and think it's her best album since BTW, but the fact that this kinda works really well as a Katy song (from her more recent repertoire, no less) goes to show how low key generic the song is. Same probably goes for How Bad Do U Want Me & Don't Call Tonight, pls don't come for me. The first half of Mayhem (+ Shadow of a Man) really is on a whole different level...

The first half of the album is a different genre than the ones you mentioned. I respect your opinion, but I disagree on the fact that those three songs are on par with Katy’s recent work… or other mainstream music honestly. Other than vocals of course, MAYHEM’s production is much, MUCH better. The stereo image is wide and breathable, there are live instruments mixed with electronic music and there’s just another level of complexity. When you listen to other artists, some productions are so basic, you feel like you could make that instrumental yourself. If anything, I’d say Gaga was able to take a couple of songs and show that even a mainstream sound can be beautiful with a strong sense of quality and mastery. Mother of Puppies 36,086
Ehm... yes this would work as a Katy song... and also Katy has a big repertoire of GREAT SONGS in her discography... One of The Boys, Teenage Dream and Prism were peak Katy... and also some very good ones on Witness & Smile Let's just leave 143 out of the equation THEY CALL ME LADY MOP

I agree, the production for the whole album is really amazing. Listened to it with quality headphones for the first time this morning after spending most of my time with Mayhem driving in my car so far, and you can't help but appreciate all the details and different layers the songs have to them. And yeah, of course I don't mean to say Gaga's and Katy's vocal deliveries are anywhere near the the same league. Tbh, I think Gaga's vocals are what saves these songs for me. But Idk, I don't have any real musical knowledge at all, so this is just completely based on my personal preferences. But the songs I mentioned in my first post really don't stand out to me regarding their melody, structure, instrumentalization etc. And I guess it's no coincidence that so many have noted that some parts of Mayhem's middle section kinda remind them of Taylor Swift songs. It's great if people love every single song on the album and wouldn't change a thing about it, but you can't deny that songs like Disease, Abracadabra or Perfect Celebrity are really strong standout tracks. Like them or not, but tey are the opposite of forgettable, and I love them because they are kind of experimental and aggressive, while ALSO delivering production- and vocal-wise. Not saying the whole album has to be like that or else it's bad, but I think there's a reason she picked exactly these tracks as singles and album teasers. Just my 2 cents. I totally get what you’re saying. And look, you have taste henny This heavy industrial dark pop of the first three songs + the dirty electroclash in Perfect Celebrity is chef’s kiss and it’s what really makes Gaga stand out from other pop singers. Plus it’s what we were expecting and wishing for. But the central part of the album also has a strong DNA with this disco/electro-funk/Prince-esque/MJ-esque sound, then there’s the Taylor influence of HBDYWM and then there’s the final part which is pop ballads. Tracklist, to make more sense, should have been: Disease, Abra, GOE, PC, LD, VIY, KILLAH, ZB, SOAM, DCT, HBDYWM, TB, BOG, DWAS. I know it’s a small thing but tracklisting can really change the perspective on an album. And yes the first few songs are more memorable production-wise, but also the second half of the record is good quality and I woudn’t say generic, it’s actually rich in production and small details, just a different genre and probably not as avant-garde. For example in The Beast I hear a Whitney influence in the first part of the instrumental and also in other spots. DrKindnessKunt1999 5,915
It saddens me that Katy had the choice to comeback with something of this quality (she could literally worked with anyone she wanted to). Instead she chose to make 143 with Dr. Luke out of all people.

The Don't Call Tonight slander will not be tolerated! Katy could never give these vintage ace of base teas.
