Doechii Wants to see "More Gay Artists", Talks Bisexuality

Doechii was interviewed at the Grammys and asked about what she wants to see more of, to which she said "I want to see more gay artists". Doechii, who has recently risen to mainstream success, has been open about her sexuality. The Grammy winner stated, "I always knew I was gay. I am currently bisexual. I am with a woman now, and I have always known that I loved women." Doechii has made it clear that she has always known about her sexuality since she was little. Doechii is a part of a number of LGBTQ+ artists that won at the 2025 Grammys, including Chappell Roan, Lady Gaga, etc.

From the last 20 years, off the top of my head, I can name: Gaga, Lil Nas, Adam Lambert, Billie Eilish, Sam Smith, Kim Petras, Chappell Roan, Megan Thee Stallion, ... who else has achieved mainstream success? Janelle Monae, Doechii, Troye Sivan, Orville Peck, etc I know there's many more queer artists but talking BB Hot 100... could name 300+ straight artists.

Love Gaga but she gives me 99% hetero straight woman vibes, and maybe 1% gay. Not erasing her bisexuality but I don't think she's had a relationship with a woman ever (or at least in the public eye). Sexuality can change so maybe she considers herself straight now?

She probably did have relationships with women back in the day, maybe she’s just never been in love with a woman. I totally think she was at least FWB with Lady Starlight back in the day and she clearly still finds women attractive. 
 

Her whole attitude gives me queer kid as well, so she’s definitely still a part of the community. Plus she still claims her bisexuality.

But you kinda are erasing her bisexuality with those comments aren’t you? Does she need to be in a public relationship with a woman to pass as a true bisexual?

I think for Lady Gaga it is a "sexual vs romantic" situation. Both sexual and romantic feelings exist on spectrums. I think Lady Gaga has had more sexual feelings for women, and she has morsels had both feelings for men. I am somewhat similar with both romantic and sexual for men, but really only romantic for women.

Not at all. She can define herself how she wants, I’m just saying she seems way more on the straight side than gay side of bisexuality. At a certain point does it still make sense to define yourself this way?

Okay, I get that completely. To be honest, I think a lot of people are bi to a degree but most don’t admit or act on it. I think there are a lot “straights” in this camp but they would still define themselves as hetero/straight in the end.

She probably has more romantic feelings towards men and sexual attraction towards both, so, she is bisexual. Bisexual people have different degrees of sexual/romantic attraction towards men and women. Now, if she wasn't famous would she label herself as bi? Probably not, she would just live her life, she wouldn't care. But as she is famous and has a deep relationship with the LGBTQ+ community, it's kind of more required of her to take a harder stance and label herself politically. She has been accused in the past of being a straight woman profiting off of the community and monsters had to find videos of her saying she is attracted to women to counter-argue the accusations. So, I think she wouldn't label herself if she wasn't famous but in the end she's bi and that's it.

You explained it really well and I agree with all your points. Although I don’t get upset when straight artists “profit” of us as long as they actually support our community in the end.

As a bisexual, there's no 'straight' side or 'gay' side of bisexuality, only a bisexual side. It's pretty frustrating to see your identity reduced to being nothing more than made up of two other identities.

I’m bisexual too and I would definitely tell people I’m more on the gay side

I'll just keep going on this discussion cause I'm liking it, sorry if we're straying a bit away from the original topic, BUT...

I have a faint sexual attraction to women. In theory, it would be required of me to label myself as bisexual, but that would feel uncomfortable for me, I don't think I am. I'm gay. So, I think it boils down to how we define ourselves.

Sexuality and labels are so complicated that I think we should try not to label people's sexuality by what they do, but solely by what they say they are. 

Trixie said in the podcast recently that she hooks up with straight men sometimes, and people often react by saying they are not straight if they slept with a man, and she snapped "would I say I'm bi if I slept with a woman? No". And that shifted my perspective a little bit. At the end of the day, it's how we define ourselves and everyone should be validated and respected.
