Since the 00s there's not really been a culture of live music scenes in pop like there was around so many colossal genres and sounds of the preceeding decades.

The 00s had electroclash which didn't really have staying power although you can definitely see its influences in hyperpop. 

Hyperpop is the first "new" genre that's grown organically from a small live music culture and made it to the mainstream in godknows how long.

But prior to the 00s we had:

The summer of love & Woodstock

Outlaw Country

The Blitz Kids/New Romantics/Sheffield Sound

Merseybeat

Madchester & the Hacienda 

A lot of early grunge acts were Seattle based.

Tamala Motown & Detroit the Motor City

Cool Britania 

 

Like Brat Summer is the first thing close to any of these in years.

Never really owned any 80s CDs but have gotten into it a lot more so I have been getting 80s vinyl as I recreate my old CD collection as well.  It’s sometimes like discovering brand new music because of all the albums I’ve never heard. Aside from some of the radio stuff from I was a kid.

to me because of the production - it is very open, creating space for the big catchy melodies + it brings some nostalgia even if you have not lived during the time

For a lot of things this can be put to that decade. There's a reason why nearly everything nowadays stems from that period.

They had the theatrics, the voices, the musicianship. They were building songs on feelings, not for tikatoké. I think the reason I love Die with a smile so much is because it was crafted by MUSICIANS. You just FEEL it!

I completely agree with you. The '80s were the best decade for music. One of the reasons I love Gaga so much is because she's heavily inspired by '80s music. You can definitely hear that influence in her sound.

The 80s music was great.  I enjoy the music from the mid 50s thru the early 60s even more.  Doo wop and early rock and roll were fantastic.  The period is summarized in the movie American Graffiti.  41 songs are here.  Click on "Watch on YouTube: here:
