Sneaky Oliver 21,521
I don’t think people would care as much about a Lady Gaga ballad back then tbh, I think You and I became a cute little hit solely because the fans already knew it from Monster Ball so it kinda became special, otherwise I could totally see the fandom ignoring it if was just a brand new track on BTW (sorta like The Queen)

You and I doesn't really sound like anything else off of Born This Way. It fits well into the album, but, sonically it's in its own realm so to speak, if that makes sense? Releasing a soft-rock country influenced ballad as a promo single for an album that's mostly pop, edm, industrial and house probably would've been confusing to the GP and potentially the fans alike. At least, I think that people would've probably expected its sound [Born This Way] to be different and it could've put the era on a rocky path at first. I don't think it would've performed poorly, but having just dropped singles such as Bad Romance, Telephone & Alejandro...I don't know if it would've necessarily been a big hit either? It would've been stark in contrast to what people had already come to know and love (and expect?). It's interesting to think about though! I never thought BTW the song fitted with the rest of the album. Lyrically it was a lot more “direct” in its msg and more radio friendly

I dont hate it but i dont love it Several ballads or power ballads I like more: - Ill Never Love Again (my fav actually) - Is that alright (one of my fav Gaga vocals) - Million Reasons - Hold My Hand (my wedding song btw) - Dope (unusual song but in a good way) You and I is an ok song but feels very Country vanilla to me. I cant get excited for it and Ive maybe listened to it only a couple times in the last 10 years tbh I love that you have Hold My Hand up there, such an amazing and underrated song 1 3

TEOG(August 2011+ VMA’s) 5. Judas (December 2011/ New Year’s Eve) 6. Hair (March 2012 + BTWB Hype Single) 7. Heavy Metal Lover ft. She played it throughout the Monster Ball Tour then added Born This Way once it was released. So were hyped long before Born This Way came out. I think this is why I love it soooo much to this day, she played it so much back then and I loved how she talked about the song everytime she played it. it's my karaoke song now. still one of my favorite Gaga songs of all time, it fits so perfect on BTW mmmy name ~isn't~ aliceee

It debuted #39 on BB100 the week BTW released, which is impressive. I disagree on it being a pre-album single, though. Almost any track released before BTW could've gone #1 (or close) with proper rollout. The pre-album singles needed to preview the overall sound/message of BTW (A) to fans and the GP, who were anxious to see how her TF + TFM sound had evolved. Y&I would've alienated more fans than members of the GP it would've won over, IMO. Fans would've been disappointed if a single (during a rollout that felt like an eternity) was a song they'd heard on tour for months and a 180 sonically from TF/TFM. Casual fans/GP would've said she'd run out of ideas, recycling an old song in the run-up to 1 of the most anticipated Pop albums of the decade. This risk had little upside, as those who liked the sound would've been turned off by BTW, which had nothing else similar to it. Y&I was a great 4th single, as few songs on BTW could've even gotten strong Pop airplay. EOG was Gaga's first HAC/AC crossover hit and Y&I helped establish her for good on those formats. Pre-album was the best chance to get exposure and Airplay for the less-commercial tracks, saving the most Radio-friendly ones for after: 1. Born This Way 2. Marry The Night Promo Single #1: ScheiBe Promo Single #2: Hair 3. The Edge of Glory 4. You and I 5. Hair 6. Americano
RAMROD 105,940
Love the visuals and the states version were cute, but it's not a good song and my personal skip track from the alboom. Its peak position on BB100 is #6, which is also a testament to that. It is not good enough song, especially to start the era. I think at that time, Gaga had been performing it so much at the monster ball and she said a number of times that it wasn’t gonna be a single, hence why she decided to perform it for us before the release of the album. She released You and I around the time of the VMAs and teased Government Hooker/Heavy Metal Lover, the latter being my all time favourite Gaga song. I just had it in my head one or both of those songs were gonna be performed and so when she came out and did the You and I performance it just felt very anti climactic. At that point she had performed it to death and I was over it becoming a single. www.youtube.com/jmremixes

You and I 5. Hair 6. Americano ALMOST agree with this order BUT “You And I “ STALLED the era worldwide as a post album single! So instead I would put Judas as Single 4 and YAI as a promo. Judas as a 4th single wouldn’t stall the era because it’s dance-pop. So something like this: 1. Born This Way (February 2011) 2. Marry The Night (May 2011) Promo Singles : You And I+ Hair 3. The Edge of Glory (August 2011) 4. Judas ( December 2011) 5. Hair (March 2012) 6. Heavy Metal Lover ft. Ke$ha (July 2012)

It would have been a guaranteed number 1 and it absolutely would have highlighted what the album was about. Love is a huge theme of the record, the idea of being born to be someone’s in fashion of his love. It would have highlighted the more rock n roll side of the record
