Beyoncé is now able to trademark her 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy's name after a lengthy legal battle.

Beyonce officially won her court case against a small Wisconsin boutique — who had held the trademark since September 2009 — for legal rights to the phrase 'Blue Ivy' according to The Trademark Official Gazette.

The Single Ladies songstress first began her battle with federal regulators in early 2012 when her eldest child was born.  The filing faced resistance from wedding planner Veronica Morales, who had used "Blue Ivy Events" for her business since 2009. However, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled in 2020 that the event company’s name and Blue Ivy’s name were distinct, dismissing Morales’ objections.

In November 2023, Beyoncé filed for the trademark once again however, a tentative issue was ruled because a Wisconsin boutique owned the Blue Ivy logo. The examiner claimed the store and the star's daughter's name were 'confusingly similar.'
The boutique never refuted the application, leaving Beyoncé free to file the trademark officially, which was publicized in The Trademark Official Gazette formally on December 31.

:enigma: her child is a business venture sksksks

But I get it. She knows business, and doesn't want her children name been used by other people for their own gain.

I love her but how can you trademark your daughter's name? It's alienating af

It is not uncommon and it doesn’t mean Beyoncé will use it for profit (tho she probably will :billie:), it’s just to prevent other people to use Blue’s name for profit in bad faith or try to sell it back to Bey or Blue for an absurd price.

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

it's also probably because blue will need to own her name and market it at some point if she wants to become an entertainer like her mama

I both get it and somewhat dislike it lol

It makes sense in a "she's protecting her child" kind of way and it's gross in a "she went after a small business" kind of way lol

it makes complete sense given that blue - whether people like it or not, or even whether she should be or not - is a public figure

this is a girl who's likely going to be in the public eye for the rest of her life, why would she not trademark it? it doesn't have to be used

Spoiler

probably will be used though :sis:

The company protesting a name is odd, but Beyonce trying to trademark her own daughters name is... a choice. Blue Ivy can't even make a decision about it at her age. Honestly, Blue Ivys whole life has felt weird to me. I feel like her whole identity was crafted for her. She is thankfully not known as "Beyonces daughter", but her identity still feels crafted.

Gross comment tbh

I'm sure he loves her but they've commodified her since birth and as a parent its not something I can fathom whatsoever, especially knowing what we know about Jay Z overall
