Supreme Court: Tik Tok will be USA-banned on Jan 19th

Private poll: The future of TikTok

133 members have voted

  1. 1. Is this the Golden Heyday, the prime and peak, of TikTok now?

    • Yes, TikTok will never be as widely used again as now and decline in popularity after January on a global scale
      49
    • TikTok's peak will continue for more years to come (new users from the rest of the world will join and compensate for the Americans)
      27
    • British, Canadian and Australian users will steal ideas from Americans on Instagram Reels/YT shorts and present them as their own on TikTok and become the "New Popular Americans" on TikTok, while Americans remain isolated on Flop Shorts/Reels
      22
    • Western Europe will follow the US example in 2026-7 and also ban TikTok, which will lead to the collapse of the App's popularity
      30
    • Americans will watch tutorials how to circumvent the ban (VPNs, manual installation, etc.) and TikTok will become more popular among youth due to being the hot forbidden thing like alcohol that teens are not allowed to have but somehow get
      39
    • YT Shorts and Instagram Reel will become the new most popular apps globally but China will hack and launch a cyber attack on them and put them in demise, too
      21

It is absolutely up to us to work on this. Because what happens when we ban TikTok? Do you think that the individuals that are spreading and engaging in misinformation are going to go “well shucks, guess they were right!” No. They are going to be angry, and they’re going to take their anger out in other ways. You can call me idealistic, that’s fine I’ll own that. Someone has to be. But I think it’s unrealistic to expect actual change from banning. Prohibition is constantly thrown around as an example. It didn’t stop people from imbibing. It only made them more creative.
Do we need regulations? Yes. Do we need rules? For sure. But this is beyond that. I don’t even like the app, nor do I use it. But I know how humans are, and this is not going to be the fix anyone is expecting it to be. Besides, does anyone really think that the US government is doing this out of the goodness of their hearts and best intentions? And don’t get me wrong, I absolutely do not trust China’s government in this situation. My issue isn’t necessarily with that sort of suspicion. It’s the philosophy behind this that really bugs me.
We do need to work on this as a culture and as a society. Regulations are great too. But the call is coming from inside the house. Treating the symptoms is not going to cure the problem.

I really respect your opinion and that you took the time to write a lengthy reply like this, thank you. I think we just have to agree to disagree regarding most of these points. There might be some common ground though because although I do prefer a ban over just letting things continue the way they have been these past years, I would also find it much better to keep the app open, but with much stricter regulations and constant moderation to tackle the lack of empathy, lack of consequences, rise of bots and spreading of misinformation we see now.

It's exactly what China is doing already, and they do it to promote their leaders' values and ideology. So people may say this goes completely against freedom of speech, but if the limitation of free speech in social media contexts leads to less racism, discrimination, xenophobia, right wing populism, misinformation and conspiracy theories, then I'm all for it. Just as China is strengthening their own core values through censoring etc., we in Europe and the Western world should be doing a much better job in strengthening our liberal and democratic values. That also means protecting them from being attacked and eroded by institutions who are willing to weaponize tools like social media. I'm honestly fed up with people spreading hatred, false information and promoting inequality all under the guise of "free speech", going completely uncensored and unpunished while they're intent on taking away other people's rights.

EDIT: adding this in, hope you catch it in time! Gotta also say I think I misunderstood your original point to begin with. Just want to reiterate that my issue isn’t necessarily the regulation aspects. I do agree that there’s some super dangerous aspects of social media. I’m more concerned about the likeliness of inspiring change among people who tend to buy into the misinformations. I work with a lot of individuals who are… set in their ways, so to speak. I would love to see society function as a whole better. I strongly feel like some work needs to be done on an individual level if we want to see things get better. Because a lot of them? They don’t respond well to a stronger governmental hand. It just tends to push them farther into their delusions. And I could easily see that being the case for a lot of individuals on TikTok. Can they all be helped? No definitely not. But I want to keep advocating for that change.

Sorry, I didn't catch your edit in time, but I feel like what you explained just goes to prove that our points of view aren't actually as drastically different as I first thought.

I work in a social job too, and I can completely relate to what you said about people not responding well to government issued bans - especially when they are not explained or communicated well. On the other hand, things simply do not work when I - as someone who had to swear an oath to uphold democracy and liberal values - am unwilling to enforce some basic rules that are meant to protect a large group of people, or if I'm unwilling to consequentially punish those who do not care about other people's freedom or wellbeing. I really wish Western leaders would do much more to protect our freedom (and not just the freedom of speech, which is so often exploited to promote extremely undemocratic ideologies).

FOR the ban.

Short form media in general (reels, shorts, tiktoks, etc) is turning all our brains to mush and sucks up all our time. Cant go on insta/fb/twitter for one minute without getting sucked into reels

Ngl thinking that the gov’t should be allowed to use the false pretext of “national security” to ban short form media because you don’t like it is genuinely brain rot

Tiktok has some very positive content so it’s sad to see so many people against it. It’s a great way to reach a wider audience for business owners, and raise awareness for non-profits.

It’s also how a lot of people are informed about what’s happening with the incoming administration. One of my favorite creators right now is Aaron Parnas, he reports on this daily.

One thing that would be interesting to see is how the ban influences the music industry. Bloody Mary recharted 11 years after its release and that wouldn’t have happened without Tiktok.

Yes! I discovered people like Aaron Parnas through YouTube, but I understand that I don't represent the majority of people.

On a different note, another major issue with this is misinformation (the pandemic continues). People are blaming this on Biden when Trump publicly started this in 2020.

tiktok has been a great tool for gaga herself, if it ends up banned she can't use it because she's an American :rip:and honestly it has been great to see her so active on social media again, reminds me of her twitter days and i'm sure every fan can relate.

Hopefully they all find a solution that works for everybody.

I don't use tiktok but let's just accept that American culture no longer has a hold on the world that they feel threatened enough to ban this

See I think Bloomberg is overestimating this.

Trump's increasingly suggested he's opposed to the ban and last week met with the TikTok CEO at Mar-A-Lago. It's no secret this ban is just Zuckerberg paying to take out the competition & Trump is very anti-Zuckerberg and blames Meta (along with many others) for losing in 2020.

Like on Monday, Trump said:
"I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok, because I won youth by 34 points...there are those that say that TikTok has something to do with that. TikTok had an impact."

I'd be shocked if the Supreme Court don't agree to the application for the ban to be delayed and thus push it into Trump's actual term for a decision. Especially as the Federal Appeals Court's ruling in favour of the ban cited that the bill was the work of "successive Presidents" because Trump had called for a ban in his first term.

Thank you guys for voting. There are now exactly 100 votes and the poll is now quite representative - each of your votes now accounts for exactly one percent.

Almost half (49%) think that TikTok's short video reign is almost over and that the Shorts/Reels era is about to begin. 39% think that we will continue to see successful singles from TikTok and Shorts/Reels will remain a flop. One eighth (12%) think that all three are past their peak because they sabotage each other and, weakened, no one will be a winner.

Personally, I find that TikTok fills the void in my life in a way that no other app or website did before. I also find that I sometimes spend too much time on TikTok and it's an endless cycle. But I would rather say that it's one of TikTok's strengths. Before that on YouTube (when there were no shorts either), I would click on a YouTube video and then I would find it difficult to find the next suitable video (except for music, the algorithm helped me there). All the videos had a clickbait layout and I clicked here and there, but I wasn't satisfied.

YouTube (back then) somehow assumed that you have a clear idea, but maybe you just want to be entertained and discover something new, be surprised - without having to make a new choice every time. Choice is exhausting in the long run.

I was spoiled for choice. I was disorientated. I didn't know what to click. And if I clicked and didn't like, I received more from what I didn't like.

On TikTok, I no longer am spoiled for choice. I just click next and if don't like it, I just have to keep clicking next until I like something and eventually I like something, and because the videos are short, it works pretty quickly. It's simple but also revolutionary. TikTok is not asking me what I would like to have, it is giving it to me directly. I don't want this YouTube selection screen anymore where I have to click a video or another lengthy one from the same creator and I don't wanna go to the copycats Shorts and Reels, I wanna stick to the original.

People will learn to get around the ban and eventually the government will relent.

As stated in the OP, it's not being banned for any reason other than rich American based social media types pulling politicians' strings (filling their wallets).

Imagine the American government doing anything in the interest of Americans' rights or security :ladyhaha:

For anyone arguing the "short form media rots your brain" bit, you're not wrong but bans won't fix it.

Teaching kids how to moderate their use of social media and how to think about what they see and do online in a critical way is key to fixing that problem.
