Supreme Court: Tik Tok will be USA-banned on Jan 19th

Update, January, 17th 2025: The Supreme Court has now banned TikTok. The app will disappear in American appstores on Sunday.

Today, the Supreme Court ruled that unless TikTok is sold by its Chinese owner to an American owner, it will be banned starting January 19. Since TikTok has refused a sale, it is heading for a ban on Sunday. It is the first time in the 21st century that a major media platform has been banned in the US. American politicians can now accuse foreign apps of foreign influence and thus stop them. This paves the way for America to be dominated only by American media. Since the American media landscape is characterized by a very strong monopoly, this means a restriction of choice for users and their freedom to select their apps.

On January 10, the Supreme Court will decide whether or not TikTok will be banned in the US starting January 19, 2025. Bloomberg analysts estimate the chance that the Supreme Court will rule in TikTok's favor at only 30%, which in turn means that it has a 70% chance of being banned.

On the one hand, the TikTok ban would be a clear indication of freedom of expression restrictions in the US and would have to be stopped by the Supreme Court, but on the other hand, the Supreme Court has proven to be arbitrary, like a surprise bag.

McCourt, the previous owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has expressed interest in buying TikTok, and TikTok could remain in the US if it is sold to an American. However, TikTok's owner, ByteDance, is firmly opposed to a sale. It all boils down to either a total ban or no ban.

Even though the ban will only affect the US and the US does not represent the majority of users, it is assumed that the ban will have profound effects beyond the US, as a significant number of content creators are based in the US. These content creators make trends, are imitated, generate activity and contribute to the app's appeal. The loss of US content cannot usually be easily compensated for by other content, as US content is usually in English and is also consumed by other countries, while foreign language content from other countries fails to make it to international success due to language barriers.

Meta/Facebook has been lobbying to eliminate TikTok as a competitor in order to increase its own market share. It is coming down to a battle between the US and China.

Short form media in general (reels, shorts, tiktoks, etc) is turning all our brains to mush and sucks up all our time. Cant go on insta/fb/twitter for one minute without getting sucked into reels

i dont have tiktok but im against it being banned.

zuckerberg and musk are quite literally s*cking donald trump's **** and already have so much influence over our society. someone could probably tell me why im naive, but i feel unconcerned that the app is based in China... if we're already gonna be influenced and have our data used against us by domestic powers, i mean... whats the big deal about data being used/influence being done by foreign powers... at least we wont be enabling meta and x to become even more powerful... idk im not the smartest on this topic so im probably ignoring key points (aside from the "brain rot" thing yall are speakong of, which... as someone else said, if its not tiktok, its just gonna be the same thing on ig and yt so eliminating tiktok does nothing in that regard)

They're not banning the app because it's "brain rot" or because the government thinks it's beneficial for people's health. They're doing it because it's based in China and there are concerns over national security and people's data being used by foreign countries. But tbh, I don't buy it. It's not like the American government is already surveying us and using our data anyway...

I've never used TikTok, and the "brain rot" argument is valid, but if it's not TikTok, it's gonna be some other app. Insta and Twitter are already awful and don't contribute in any healthy sort of way, so what's the deal with TikTok? I'd argue that Twitter is much worse than TikTok. This just seems like a whole bunch of mumbo jumbo and political theatre when the government could be doing things that are actually helpful for the American people.

I don't care about the reasons behind (I know they are all about politics) but I am so glad, and I hope it happens globally at some point. And I woukld be even happier if twitter and other trash comes after. We all were happier when we didn't have that bullsh*t
