Supreme Court: Tik Tok will be USA-banned on Jan 19th

Private poll: The future of TikTok

133 members have voted

  1. 1. Is this the Golden Heyday, the prime and peak, of TikTok now?

    • Yes, TikTok will never be as widely used again as now and decline in popularity after January on a global scale
      49
    • TikTok's peak will continue for more years to come (new users from the rest of the world will join and compensate for the Americans)
      27
    • British, Canadian and Australian users will steal ideas from Americans on Instagram Reels/YT shorts and present them as their own on TikTok and become the "New Popular Americans" on TikTok, while Americans remain isolated on Flop Shorts/Reels
      22
    • Western Europe will follow the US example in 2026-7 and also ban TikTok, which will lead to the collapse of the App's popularity
      30
    • Americans will watch tutorials how to circumvent the ban (VPNs, manual installation, etc.) and TikTok will become more popular among youth due to being the hot forbidden thing like alcohol that teens are not allowed to have but somehow get
      39
    • YT Shorts and Instagram Reel will become the new most popular apps globally but China will hack and launch a cyber attack on them and put them in demise, too
      21

Can they do it after LG7 and Disease get viral thanks to this f*cking app?

Or maybe it's for the better and Gaga starts performing her new songs on TV... :gum:

They're banning it because the company isn't American owned so the US government can't just steal data like they do from Meta and Google. It's not about public safety or Chinese propaganda, it's just about controlling data.

I'm not sure what China does with the data and if anything, but the US was documented about abusing data "requests". YT Reels and Instagram do the same exact thing, it's just that those companies hand over data and comply to US's censorship requests (especially about Palestine).

I'm not using a logical fallacy to defend TikTok or attack Meta. Both are garbage and spyware in principle

I don’t like and use TikTok, but it’s completely hypocritical to ban it and not all other social media platforms. They’re all collecting your data, not just TikTok.

You can’t criticize it as brain rot and not mention the likes of Instagram, Twitter, etc.

Banning this app is not going to bring around the change people want. Social media is not making people much “dumber” than they were before. It’s just loudly showcasing us all the truth of how humans are.

The internet is the largest and most accessible library of information that’s ever existed up to this point. Anyone could easily fact check the information they get on TikTok. But they don’t. They aren’t interested.

The individuals who get their superficial and incorrect information off of the app are the same individuals that would have gotten their information pre-internet from their “Great Uncle Jim, who had a friend-who has a cousin-who worked as a janitor for the department of health.”

All this ban will do is alter one specific way people spend their time. I don’t even use the damn thing, but this ban doesn’t seem like it’s being fueled by the purest intentions. I don’t think it should be up to the government what apps we use on our personal devices. Seems like it opens the door to issues down the road. Maybe I’m wrong.

I love it. But I am also not someone who gets addicted to social media. Frankly, I get bored after maybe 15 minutes.

I love animals and new music and my entire fyp is mostly just that. So if I'm stressed at work? I watch five or six dog videos and I just feel better.

I NEVER EVER get my political "news" there or anything of actual import. I scroll right past that nonsense.

So for people like me, it feels like we're getting punished for no reason. But oh well. Life goes on.

I am from Romania and our country canceled our presidential elections because of Tiktok.

First time in history.

You'll hear a lot of **** about this decision but.. The reality is that the world is changing. The politicians now are realizing the power of social media.

It's not like they didn't use bots and stuff like that until now.

But now, they are seeing the real potential of these instruments.

It's gonna be a fun ride from now on.

Mister G

Can't feed the homeless, can't provide better resources for health care for the sick, can spend billions on war and the unaliving of innocent people, but sure let's ban Tik Tok because THAT's the real problem we're facing in the U.S. especially as we're on the brink of another government shutdown.

The amount of people on here unaware of how important TikTok is for small businesses and avoiding US media censorship because it's not based in the US. I don't like TikTok myself, and I don't have it. Some research though shows the importance of apps like this that have opportunities for small businesses. My mom has long seen TikTok as a backup for her small business, and she might lose it which I know is concerning for her.

Meta/Facebook has been lobbying to eliminate TikTok as a competitor in order to increase its own market share. It is coming down to a battle between the US and China.

As if we will go to Facebook :icant:

I think it's false that they're concerned about security, I think it's all motivated by money. Last year I didn't care as much about this but after seeing what's happened to twitter (I'm pretty sure it was involved in election interference) I'm completely suspicious about this ban

Yeah there is a bad side to the app but banning it is cutting off a unique communication between people and a v quick way for news to travel between countries and across the US as well

I am very opposed to free speech so I fully support this move

If free speech equates to every dumb person on this planet having their own platform (or multiple ones) where they can let stupidity and dangeorus conspiracy theories run amok then yeah, we need someone to moderate this sh*t NOW! Better yet, make it yesterday.

And I don't wanna generalize here, but when the least harmful thing to come out of TikTok and social media in general are narcissistic people who are "influential" for all the wrong reasons and normalize self absorbed, unempathetic behavior, then I'd say good riddance. :applause:

Like it or not, this is the new reality. TikTok is not responsible for human beings’ behavior. This is a reflection of how people are right now. Banning this app is not going to change how people interact on the internet. Facebook, Instagram, etc.. You can ban any app you want, but it’s the people that make the atmosphere. Not the app itself. If we want change we need to start working on ourselves and helping others.
Banning things only makes people angry. it doesn’t teach them anything. There is all sorts of psychological research on how you modify behavior. Positive or negative punishment is not a way to go about it.

Sorry but to me that line of argument is as far from reality as hardcore pacifists arguing in favor of getting rid of their country's military to stop global warfare. We need bans, regulations and people taking actions against those abusing the system. Social media in its mildest form brings out the worst in people because anonimity, while in its most dangerous form, it swings elections and causes misinformation on national or global scales. Nobody can say for certain anymore if an online interaction is between real people, a person and a bot, or bots only.

Social media is already being weaponized and exploited, mostly by organizations and governments who do not put much value on democratic and liberal values. Why doesn't China allow the standard version of TikTok, its very own creation and gift to the world, to be used in its own country? I really don't mean to be rude when I say this, but to me it honestly seems a bit naive to believe it's completely up to us, the people, to decide to use this technology for good or evil. That ship has sailed.

It is absolutely up to us to work on this. Because what happens when we ban TikTok? Do you think that the individuals that are spreading and engaging in misinformation are going to go “well shucks, guess they were right!” No. They are going to be angry, and they’re going to take their anger out in other ways. You can call me idealistic, that’s fine I’ll own that. Someone has to be. But I think it’s unrealistic to expect actual change from banning. Prohibition is constantly thrown around as an example. It didn’t stop people from imbibing. It only made them more creative.
Do we need regulations? Yes. Do we need rules? For sure. But this is beyond that. I don’t even like the app, nor do I use it. But I know how humans are, and this is not going to be the fix anyone is expecting it to be. Besides, does anyone really think that the US government is doing this out of the goodness of their hearts and best intentions? And don’t get me wrong, I absolutely do not trust China’s government in this situation. My issue isn’t necessarily with that sort of suspicion. It’s the philosophy behind this that really bugs me.
We do need to work on this as a culture and as a society. Regulations are great too. But the call is coming from inside the house. Treating the symptoms is not going to cure the problem.

EDIT: adding this in, hope you catch it in time! Gotta also say I think I misunderstood your original point to begin with. Just want to reiterate that my issue isn’t necessarily the regulation aspects. I do agree that there’s some super dangerous aspects of social media. I’m more concerned about the likeliness of inspiring change among people who tend to buy into the misinformations. I work with a lot of individuals who are… set in their ways, so to speak. I would love to see society function as a whole better. I strongly feel like some work needs to be done on an individual level if we want to see things get better. Because a lot of them? They don’t respond well to a stronger governmental hand. It just tends to push them farther into their delusions. And I could easily see that being the case for a lot of individuals on TikTok. Can they all be helped? No definitely not. But I want to keep advocating for that change.
