StrawberryBlond 14,089
That is a lot of merch for a movie that doesn't look like it'll have a big audience. I was shocked to discover the first trailer after 6 months has only managed to accumulate 9 million views and 227k likes and the second one released a month ago has only managed to scrape 921k views and 23k likes. For perspective, JFAD's trailers each had 36m views/961k likes and 30m views/526k likes. And look how bad its performing. I know this is just YouTube I'm basing it on but those figures really aren't good for such an apparently "anticipated" film especially one with a second part due for release a whole year later. The stage musical to motion picture pipeline is an extreme risk. You get the occasional big hit (West Side Story), good but not to blockbuster levels (Evita) or flop disastrously (Cats). Most audiences now are very sceptical about stage musicals becoming movies, saying it doesn't translate well and the magic is lost. A 2 parter for Wicked is a massive risk. Unless you're something like Harry Potter, you ain't pulling off a two-parter. If people don't like the first part, they certainly won't be seeing the second and you can kiss goodbye to anyone who isn't already a fan of the original musical who hasn't seen part 1 be interested in part 2. 12 hours ago, MessyTop said: lol are you kidding me? Everyone in the world knows The Wizard of oz, Arianna and wicked. Trust me, is gonna be the biggest opening of the year That doesn't mean they'll go to see it. Musical fans are much more discerning about musicals to movies now, particularly after Cats. It's a bit much to say "everyone" knows Wicked. I can tell you that it's largely an Americanised phenomenon and I don't know anyone personally who's aware of anything outside Defying Gravity. Cynthia Erivo is not a massive name by any stretch and the rest of the cast don't have massive fanbases or big enough roles to spark interest on name recognition alone. The only truly big name here is Ariana and she's not been in a blockbuster yet. And biggest opening of the year? Deadpool And Wolverine got that with $444 million worldwide. That's going to be a hell of a figure to beat.
Whigney Houstan 1,144
I'm excited for the film, but it's all giving landfill.

An Ariana Grande themed Stanley cup??? I can't believe that after so many years of looking forward to this film this is what was produced... maybe the film is better than the marketing but I am not hopeful the two theaters near me are completely sold out on opening day. its gonna do pretty well and its had very good reviews from people that have already seen it. wicked has a HUGE following so its not going to flop at all.

MEM 2,971
As an avid collector, this is all very stressful. But I am trying to do a pros/cons list for everything. A lot of it is targeted at children/tweens and is giving landfill as some of you have already mentioned. I'm trying to invest in the stuff that reminds me I am an adult so far I have two of the OPI nail polishes, and the r.e.m. beauty collab (yeah, the whole thing... LE SIGH) Edited October 10 by MEM
ARTPOPSYCHOLOGY 6,237
I think it’ll do good at the box office but I’m already annoyed at the rare subset of Ari fans who are going to compare this musical to JFAD. Wicked is a household name. It was destined for success the minute it was announced. Edited October 10 by ARTPOPSYCHOLOGY

Charmz 3,866
Tickets went on sale yesterday and I can’t buy any tickets for this within a 100 mile radius. Everything is SOLD OUT. I called a theatre and the person working said they have never seen a movie sell tickets like this, it was really unusual. The vinyl soundtrack special edition preorder has a queue online to check out for about 7-8 hours yesterday while I was working and the website crashed several times. i… I don’t think this movie is going to flop. People know wicked is a musical and they are ready. Always & Forever, 🧚🏻♂️🦉CHARMZ🦉🧚🏻♂️
