I'm assuming this is not recent. People used to speak like this. Especially during the Cristian Siriano Project Runway season. Trans voices were not as prominent in mainstream media then. It took some years for this language to be publicly corrected.

Also (and I don't care especially to defend her specifically) the internet works by algorithm. So people reacting with "it's so weird there's nonstop bad press about X" just recognize if a negative story about someone does well, more will spring up to capitalize on the algorithm, and if you engaged with a prior example of this the algorithm will target you with it. So, yes this does come in waves. That's how the internet works. If you engage with videos of pandas, you'll lots of pandas for days.

In her defense people used to refer to drag queens with this word as well. I also knew several trans people who used this word all the time. That’s why it was World War III when Carmen came for RuPaul because so many people who used the word didn’t realize it was offensive. Robyn even used the word in one of her songs. Times have changed.

I feel like that was the era where using transphobic slurs was normalized, especially with slang like "hot tranny mess", which thankfully fell out of use.

That doesn't make it OK or not transphobic, but it's language that is very much a product of its time.

She is definitely insecure about her physique. It explains the way she reacted towards her co-star, and that journalist, immediately taking offence, and assuming they were body-shaming her. 

She feels like she's not feminine enough, and is paranoid about it
