Three of the masterminds of 9/11 terror attacks reach plea deal

Three of the men accused of plotting the 11 September, 2001 terrorist attacks have entered into a pre-trial agreement, the US Department of Defence says.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin Attash, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al-Hawsawi have been held at the US Navy base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for years without going to trial.

According to US news outlets, the men will plead guilty in exchange for the prosecution agreeing not to seek the death penalty.

The terms of the plea deal have not yet been released.

The deal was first announced in a letter sent by prosecutors to the family of victims, according to The New York Times.

"In exchange for the removal of the death penalty as a possible punishment, these three accused have agreed to plead guilty to all of the charged offenses, including the murder of the 2,976 people listed in the charge sheet," said the letter from chief prosecutor Rear Admiral Aaron Rugh.

The men are expected to formally submit their pleas in court as early as next week, the Times reported.

Some people might think that spending life in a cage is worse than death... it's always a delicate subject

This is true I didnt think of it that way. That may be worse actually. I was young when 9/11 happened but remember a lot of it. A family friend died on one of the planes and I saw how it destroyed their family.

If alive they can hope for an eventual pardon.  If Trump is planning to pardon the convicted Jan. 6th insurrectionists, who knows what else he might do down the road.  Of course he probably can't pull that off and probably doesn't want to, but hope is still hope to those 9/11 terrorists.

Nobody in their right mind would ever pardon them. Nobody in their wrong mind would do it either. 9/11 is probably the single biggest event since the Emancipation Proclamation and it's the one thing every American agrees on. Anything less than life in prison would imo cause a revolution. The president to pardon them would cement their legacy next to JFK and Abraham Lincoln.

I agree.  While you and I think a pardon will never happen, in the minds of the 911 terrorists all hope is lost if they get the death penalty.  So it makes sense to them to take the plea deal and hope.

As a european my mind cant process how some of you agree with death penalty

Although, spending your life in jail would be worse in my opinion.

Personally, I am very anti death penalty no matter how horrible the crime. I don’t think the government should ever have the authority to decide who gets to live and who gets to die. Plus rotting in prison for your entire life sounds worse than death
