It already passed and will be signed today.

Celebrating censorship is WEIRD. Instagram was spying on our conversations before Tik Tok was ever a thing. PRISM has been a thing since 2007. Thinking that banning an app is okay because it's affected music quality or because it's getting the same information the other 97 apps on your phone are is actually insane. Misinformation is all over the internet and banning Tik Tok isn't going to affect a single thing. The Kellogg boycott worked and still works, the Trump rally troll worked, Jeff Jackson was pressured to respond to his constituents. They don't like the app because it holds them and corporations accountable, they don't give a single fvck about your data. Tik Tok data doesn't even go overseas.

Ah yes, Jeff Jackson was pressured to respond to his constituents, not on the issue of poverty, rising cost of living, inflation, rising crime, no, ONLY on the issue of TikTok, and that's because the party that controls the algorithm chooses which narratives to amplify and which narratives to suppress.

Yes, I recognize that there are issues with other platforms too. But I'm not comfortable with a social media app being used by an adversarial foreign government to sow division and have control over what the public should think.

Aside from this, I support legislation that forces transparency in terms of algorithms. We regulate everything else, but we don't regulate social media algorithms, which are capable of influencing public opinion and creating obsessions, mental health problems etc...

A foreign-owned app shouldn't be able to advance its own interests by manipulating the algorithm, to serve its own agenda.

China bans TikTok in mainland china, but wants to control it, even though its biggest market is the West (India banned it). If TikTok is mainly for the West, then let those stakeholders control it, not the CCP.

I can get behind regulating algorithms and them requiring transparency as well as allowing a government agency oversight of the algorithms themselves. I can't get behind the total censorship of people through a medium.

Well yes, we agree on being against censorship. But the point of this bill is to divest, not really ban TikTok. The threat of a ban is meant to persuate ByteDance to sell the app to stakeholders of the market that they're profiting from.

It honestly doesn't make sense for China to ban the app in its own country, but want to control how it's used in other countries.
