Decodekid 26,659
I really don't want to be a dua hater but the "experimental sound switch" she's talking about it's really not there, this could easily be a hallucinate demo. Also, I don't think these snippets prior to release are helping her at all Long Live Gretchen 1

Judas Oyster 1,883
After thinking and thinking I have finally found out why I feel something is not clicking with the sounds of this era. I really like Dua's voice, songs and energy, and I did like Houdini but some small percentage of the song I did not like. Training Season I just don't like, even if I tried hard to like it. Now this, Illusion, I actually liked BUT then again some things don't click right. To me I found out now it's about the production choices (and I like some of Kevin Parkers songs, and I appreciate his sounds). I think my issue with this era is that even if I like that they are trying new things for Dua's new album: some of the sounds are too loud in comparison to her voice, and that is the issue. The sounds in several parts of these new songs make her voice sound underwhelming in a bad way. The instruments and her voice are like fighting each other, or taking sides - instead of feeling like harmony, fitting or working together as a whole. Damn, this took months for me to understand why something didn't sound right. I still enjoy these songs, but to me this issue makes the songs loose their potential longevity, as my ears get tired of the dissonance. Another thing I'm adding to this is that I believe (in the line of trying this new sounds/volumes/set ups) that they decided to change also her voice notes or way she sings at the same time. Creds to them for trying, but I hope she will try other more different sounds, but go all in next time. Understandably enough she loves pop and still wants to make pop (apparently, just listen to this beat and hook) but has ended up trying some new sounds and structures, while these new sounds were too amplified in moments where it does not fit her artistic nature and potential. It feels misunderstood, like Parker had a vision that does not really fit, but Dua wanted to try, and they went with it anyway just to try because it was safe enough in the realm of pop.
