Similarly, it seems both voters and even DeSantis’ staunchest allies in the state legislature are tiring of his reactionary politicking

Voters have been organizing against some of his more draconian measures and GOP lawmakers have allowed more of his culture war legislation (targeted at POC women, trans folks etc.) to effectively die. Hopefully the tide continues to turn!

As a European, I am shocked to learn that Florida is such a conservative state. I always thought it was one of the most progressive states (maybe because I grew up watching The Golden Girls).

Florida has, historically, been a pretty purple (bipartisan) state, but I would imagine that, at least in part, due to an aged population, they’ve become more conservative in recent years

We in the UK have been watching Florida in horror. It's delightful to see common sense has prevailed!

I feel bad for anyone under the age of 65 in the USA. Your Congress is full of pensioners busy creating a world they'll soon leave.

Countries should be run by young blood.

You’re not wrong. I’m from Georgia and until 2016 Florida was always “part of the South, but not really because it is its own thing” but now it is the most southern state both geographically and in values-

Yup. I moved to Florida back in 2018 and it was still a very nice place to live in. Things got extremely south I'd say mid to late 2019. Later the pandemic hit and became the most catastrophic event that has ever hit the state in decades. That's when all the conservatives started coming out of hell.

I've been saying this for years and people calls me ageist for it. Well I don't care if I am. Anyone over the age of 65 should be forced to retire from positions where they have a say in the future of the country.

If you're not going to live long enough to deal with the consequences of your own actions, then you have no place being there taking decisions for me who still has many years to live.

That's not ageist. It's common sense. The same way it isn't ageist to deny a 13 year old a driver's license.
