LateToCult 39,939
Grace Randolph never disappoints. From her latest video: “But uh, I mean, I think, y’know. I like Christopher Nolan over — I mean, uh, I actually don’t like Christopher Nolan on a personal level. But I professionally respect him.” [On who should win Best Director] ”To me, Bradley Cooper’s the problem and I think, y’know. I can’t believe voters are still so easily manipulated. Y’know, uh, there’s jokes about, like, what you need to do to get nominated for an Oscar and, y’know, I think his performance just reeks of desperation.” [On Bradley Cooper’s Best Actor Nomination] Pop off, Queen. You’ll never be Wendy Williams but you’re the only one that holds an ounce of her chaotic spirit.

StrawberryBlond 14,198
Barbie got nominated for about as much as I expected but it's messed up that Greta missed out on best director even though the film got nominated enough to the point where it should've been a given. If you clearly enjoyed the film so much, why not reward the director by giving them a nomination? Why would the film be nominated under best film but not best director? Yes, there's 10 film nom spots but only 5 director noms but it stands to reason that the most nominated films should earn a best director nom and Barbie was one of the top nominated, so what gives? Margot I don't think deserved best actress but honestly, I don't think any acting in that movie was good enough. Good enough by regular film standards but not Oscar worthy, this should be about top tier acting and this isn't the movie for that. But therefore, America and Ryan shouldn't have been nominated either. America also got nominated at the Critics Choice but that was the only other award that she's been up for in this role. That is WEIRD. If 2 big ceremonies noticed her, why wouldn't lower grade ceremonies also view her the same? Definitely the most "what?!" nomination for sure. And it's beyond me why Ryan's getting any nominations either as his acting was deliberately more shallow than Margot's by design. Or maybe the male category is just that weak. I'm sure it'll win something (my guess is for best song and best set design) but it was never going to stand a chance at major categories anyway. It's enough of a win that it's being taken so seriously by the highest awards show and I'm sure everyone involved realises that. And I also realised that Saltburn didn't get nominated whatsoever. I'd heard so much buzz about this movie, it had been nominated by major ceremonies like Golden Globes, Critic's Choice and BAFTAs but it didn't get a single thing here. Did someone involved in this movie really get under the academy's skin or something? 1 hour ago, Dennis said: Becoming less and less predictable especially in this category. Robbie hit all the precursor and was snubbed. Gaga too with Gucci. The Oscars have famously high standards when it comes to who they choose though, with very few exceptions. They tend not to nominate for just good romcom acting, it has to involve something much real, much deeper. The role of Barbie should never have ever been Oscar worthy to begin with so the fact the movie was crafted in a way that it actually could've happened is amazing and Margot will know that. As regards Gaga, you have to remember that as a singer first and foremost, the Oscars will be a bit harder on her and will be reluctant to award or even nominate her for anything other than best song, preferring to show support for full-time actresses for whom acting is their bread and butter. Just how we'd feel a bit miffed if a non-singer's first attempt at a song "stole" a Grammy nomination that we felt belonged to Gaga. You also have to remember that while a lot of people did enjoy Gaga as Patrizia, it was a polarising performance and while she was nominated heavily, she barely won any awards for it. The Oscars maybe felt it was too much of a risk to nominate her. And personally, I feel deliberately snubbing her was a test of sorts. They think she's good but want her to work for an acting Oscar. They want to see that she's not just a singer who took on an acting role or two to add another string to her bow and didn't want to give her an acting Oscar so easily instead of giving it to a jobbing actress. They really want to see she's serious about acting (and took rejection well) before bestowing her the extremely rare feat of a singer winning Best Actress. I think that's all going to fall perfectly into place with Joker. This will be her third big acting role. She lost her nomination for ASIB, wasn't nominated for HOG and now this will be third time lucky: she may well be nominated and win. She'll have earned it by that point. When the Oscars think the public believe that someone got snubbed, they're more likely to nominate them for their next project and that's when long overdue wins happen. 2

Her acting was acclaimed and the movie was a blockbuster. What movie is coming out in October that is expected to be a blockbuster, has a leading actress that the Academy will watch out for, and have Warnes Bros supporting its Academy campaign? I hope the Barbie snubs have more to do with the Academy not wanting to honor a commercial film too much and not because Warner Bros has lost its touch. In recent years they’ve shown they can get an actor an Oscar (Joaquin Phoenix and Will Smith) but it seems they’re not as good in the Best Actress category. The first movie got a lot of nominations and scored wins for Best Actor and Best Score. It is shocking that Margot didn't get nominated despite the fact that she was nominated in pretty much every other major awards show, but I don't think it's indicative of Gaga's potential nomination. And with Barbie specifically, I think people gravitated towards Ryan Gosling's performance as opposed to Margot's. With all due respect to Joaquin, who I love as an actor and as Joker, I think most of the attention for Joker 2 will be on Gaga.
