In 2013/2014, Where Did You Think Gagas Career Would Be 10 Years Later?

ARTPOP was a turning point in Gagas career, people fled, Monsters stuck around.

Those of you who saw Gaga from pre-2013 on, what did you expect Gagas career would look like today, during then? 

For me, one “unsuccessful” album wasn’t a hindrance on my belief that Gaga would be successful again. The numbers she did were on par with many of her peers during the time, higher than a lot of main pop girls. I used that as more of a beacon that the next next project would be fine. 

After ARTPOP, I thought Gaga would be regulated to smaller venues- theatres and amphitheaters (10,000 seats and lower) for a long time. As numbers came out from ARTRAVE, I was still a bit delusional as to where her demand was (I thought it would be higher). Even during Joanne, before the halftime, I thought it would be a theatre tour. I was predicting she’d do amphitheaters to match the aesthetic to Joanne.

I knew she would be able to make a comeback, but I didn’t think she would do anything in the realm of the national anthem, The Sound of Music, the Super Bowl in a short time. 

I thought she would push through with pop music and have one or two unsuccessful eras before she had another hit (I consider Joanne and Chromatica to be very good successes).

All I cared about was her passing the age 27 alive, so I didn't really think about her future career

I was just enjoying the music and living for her as a person. I knew she'd still be around, she said as much

Even if she lost all her fame and fortune, she would still make music and explore other ways to create and express herself.

This is from 2015 I think, but I remember seeing these photos and thinking to myself, wow she might really retire from all the fame and success and start living a calm life away from the paparazzi. She is over it.

Well I was 14 and didn’t even think about her success or numbers  and thankfully that’s still not my concern. I was much more busy anticipating ACT II, her next jazz album (in 2014) and when she was going to perform again rather than the size of her venues and whether she’d chart again.

I knew she would be popular again at some point, but I did not anticipate her radical change after Cheek To Cheek though

In 2013 when the hip first happened I honestly thought we wouldn’t see her anywhere near the same amount until mid/late 2014 and that there would be little to no public interest by that point. I was also only 13 when she cancelled the BTWB lol. 

I remember thinking the artRave tour was gonna be scaled back or cancelled following SXSW. Something else with her team/Interscope had to have happened following the filming of the G.U.Y. video in my opinion because she seemed so freshly angry and feeling artistically stifled. My jaw was on the floor following Swine lmao

The chart run and GP reception during ARTPOP was rough and I thought her heyday in pop was pretty much over unless she pivoted and found other ways to show off her talents. I can't tell you how relieved I was when she got the C2C era started before the artrave was over and it's only been up from there, thank goodness. I wouldn't have been surprised nor blamed her if she packed in pop music or even fame altogether

Ok, I am honestly glad she went through a softer reinvention after ARTPOP for her own mental wellbeing and explored safer avenues rather than stick with her high intensity shock-pop aesthetic. But I can’t help but feel disappointed at the same time. She lost her edge after ARTPOP and I can’t help but feel that she made Joanne in defeat; and was kind of a sell-out. (Don’t hate me )

Gaga was the most exciting and fearless pop star on the planet and all the other pop girls were copying her to an extent. And she was always being hated and scrutinised by many regardless of her success, even from day one. Her strength to continue her thing despite all that was what I loved most about her. So I never thought that one unsuccessful era would put her off her shtick all together and make her back-track so much.

I can’t help but feel that she abandoned a lot of her artistic integrity so that she could repair her fame and public persona, and that’s not really the true nature of an artist imo and I never would’ve thought she would do that, (but then we can't fathom the pressures of such extreme fame and fortune). I always thought that she would follow in Bowie’s footsteps and stay true to the revolutionary artistic pop star motif, constantly evolving and gradually perfecting her craft in a way that always kept it fresh and radical. So I admit I am not a stan of post-ARTPOP-Gaga.

 

But all aside she is human in the end of the day, I am happy she decided to put herself first and do what is most important and comfortable to her. Her happiness and wellbeing is more important than devotion to art.

I think you lowkey answered your own question OP. The ARTPOP era was pretty chaotic, attatched with the pop star fame in general, and on top of that dealing with fibro was probably when she knew she needed to take a step back as a human, not Gaga. That level of fame for 7-8 years is a LOT for just one person. 

It's funny you mentioned not being a fan of post-ARTPOP ga, but for me I became a fan after "Perfect Illusion" and Joanne lol. 

I do hope her next record that Gaga doesn't feel this much hurt, because it was a bit sad hearing her last 2 albums lyrically and vocally. TCB definitely showed us though that she was able to overcome some of those health issues which incredible to hear, like balancing her fibro and closure with fame and her Dad etc.

Oh ye I totally understand the change and respect it. It was a sensible move and she's technically more successful than ever as a star. But I do wish she was still the Lady Gaga I fell in love with.

I know but it doesn't feel the same. It's not an artistic evolution but more just mimicking her old style
