As Canadas housing crisis continues to deteriorate amind the biggest population boom in a century and the fastest growing population in the developed world, horror story after horror story of living conditions come out.

 

More recently images of how students are getting by have come out such as the listing above where 3 small matresses where stuffed in a room with only thin protable shelfs as privacy walls

I live in a crammed basement with my wife but get a discounted rate because its my grandmothers house. I consider myself fortunate...

 

The fact my living conditions at age 30 and married are luckier than most is really telling to the situation we face. This is really getting out of hand

 

And even in Winsor $325 seems super low for a room so i have to assume this is per person for all 6 people although almost $2000 (total) for a room seems on the high side so i dunno which is which

I'd take that for $325 a month. A studio in my area runs for $1500/mo.

oh it definitely $325 per bed. This exact thing (cramming multiple single beds in a room) is rampant in the areas around Conestoga college here in Kitchener. It's awful. That college has seen a 1500% (not a typo) increase in international students since 2014 and like no infrastructure built for housing them, it's completely unethical and I don't know how these schools can get away with this for much longer. 

Not to mention, it completely fvcks up the rental market for non-students too, things are WILD out here

Havent seen that.

 

But yeah its nuts here. Unless ur old or rich or inherited a house, no one owns a house to themselves anymore for their own family

 

Even ppl who do buy a house end up renting out part of their house otherwise they cant afford their mortgage

 

Funny enough, most landlords here are not rich huge investors... its everyday ppl trying to pay their own mortgage abd struggling themselves

 

Tho some landlords own extra homes as an investment property, most ppl who have a landlord normally have their landlord live in the same house. Usually in a different floor of the house... at least in the suburbs with individual homes thats common, in cities like Toronto with buildings it may be different

 

Everyone is struggling and its rediculous. We need to either lower immigration targets or get our act togethet immediately on housing comstruction

 

Canada has long had an identity tied to immigration as part of pur culture but we need to admit we can not sustain these targets anymore especially since they been raised so much to offset boomer retirees

The idea of 6 in a room is not bad if it was actually furnished nicely with a bed, some desk space, storage etc like the ones you see in tiny homes, capsule hotels, or cheap hostels.

However...

The fact that it is just a bunch of mattresses in 1 room screams s** traficking to me.

Housing supply would be even tighter if landlords only allowed 1 person or family per house. Tho some take advantage to price gouge.... the shortage is still the root of the problem

 

Most landords actually live in the same house as their tenants as a means to be able to afford their own mortgage.

 

Tho some landlords are greedy scums, the majority are regular ppl trying to survive as well. Most homes now bought in the last 10 years do not have just 1 family, cuz no one can afford a house to themselves. They will rent put either their basement or top floor etc

 

But the sad reality is if ppl didnt do that the problem would be even worse as even less housing units would be available

 

The answer to this isnt shaming landlords. Its getting more homes built ASAP

Yeah this is pretty rediculous. And the total rent X6 is almost $2000

 

Thats a scummy land lord right there taking advantage of the housing crisis

 

But as i pointed out above, the root issue is still the housing shortage. Ppl have to live somewhere. Prices will remain insane until that gets fixed. 

 

A market without enough homes means ppl have to putbid eachother to lock some ppl out of the market. The result is ppl have to push prices to the absolute brink of what they can afford and thats factoring in rentals to help pay their mortgages

This is terrible. I pay $500 dollars a month for a small room which is great and only live with two other roommates an a 2 bedroom apartment (they share the big room). That said, the owner of the apartment said she will rise our rent to $750 each by january...and that's also a fair rate in the state the rent market in Ottawa is but I am scared that by next year she'll tell us to start coughing up $900 or 1k+ each per month...now that I cannot afford at all at the moment in my life. 

I'm so upset by the situation here. We dont have enough homes so the landlords are exploiting this...we are bringing in also way too many international students and so the prices are being hiked up to exploit those students but it is also harming the locals and immigrants who moved here officially not just for studies. 

Why do we have such a housing crisis here? Do we not bring any builders when we bring in about 500k immigrants per year? I know locals are not doing construction anymore but I feel like with the amount of immigrants we bring per year we can definitely select some construction workers from abroad. We need to stop just letting in highly skilled and educated ppl into Canada...we can absolutely benefit from bringing more hands on workers from abroad instead too....we NEED them. Instead we keep bringing ppl who have PHD in like physics and then they end up being taxi drivers which is so sad for them and not that helpful for the market. We need niche workers in certain things like construction

Yeah i dunno why constructiom and trades workers arent higher up the list of priority. Highly educated ppl end up getting re-certification roadblocks to pursuing their carrers anyway (my old next door neighbour in India was a doctor and here after 2 years still wasnt able to practice medicine, i understand a refresher course to adapt to how we do things differently may he necessairy but does it have to be that complicated?

 

Most Construction trades dont have major official requirements (with a few exeptions like electricians). Its up to private companies to train and etc so those are easy to integrate ppl we desperately need!

Yeah this is god awful. But my area is similar, I mean a 400sq foot space could go from USD $3,000 to $9,000 a month depending on whether you get it furnished, if it has a private kitchen space, outside area, exact location etc.
